Would it be safe to use a 195 tread width on the stock 14s? just thought i would ask before buying them and finding out they will cause problems later down in the future

going up to a 195 will not create any clearance issues when using factory 14" rims.

195 is the hight of the tire the 2nd number is the with for a exp... 195 60 14 or something like that, the 2nd number (60 in this exp.) is alway the width of the tire

wrong...the first number is the width in mm's. the second number is aspect ratio..which is the percentage of width. if you have a 100mm wide tire, with a 50 aspect ratio...the sidewall is 50mm tall (from bead to tread IIRC). and the third is the wheel diameter of course.

The 195 is NOT the tread width. Even the exact same size tires of different brands will have different tire tread widths.
The width is the size of the BULGE in the tire. Take 55% of that [195/55/14] and that is the height above the rubber tire above the rim. Since there is rubber above and below, 2 X195 X 0.55 + rim diameter is the total diameter. That X Pi is the circumference.

i'm going to look this up later...but i could swear aspect ratio was total height...indluding that hidden by the rim.

and also...if 195 is the width of the bulge..explain to me on what width wheel that is. is that on a 6" wheel, a 6.5...7, even? if you put the same tire on a different width wheel....the bulge will be a different width. i've always heard it was tread width, and that some tires vary on bulge size...hence clearance issues on some tires in autoX at 225 in STS class, yet other 225's will work (and it's the bulge that rubs...not the tread ovbiously...the strut).

also...should i get pictures of my tires mounted with one laying across the width of the other...to show my 40 series tire shows nowhere near 40% of the width above the rim?

http://www.heeters.com/tirechart.shtml

section width is total width including the bulge..which blows my mind. how do 2 different 225 tires have different sidewall widths then? with the same wheels, a 225 Yokohama DID fit my car witout rubbing the strut (up frong, 215's in rear only)...and the 225 Falken did NOT fit..it rubbed the strut with the sidewall.

i was right about aspect ratio, though...it's both exposed and hidden section height.

The sidewall Bulge is the Cross Section wider then the tread , tread width is the contact patch area . Different sidewall width is from different types of wall construction , stiffer walls not as wide . A narrower wheel will make a tire bulge more in the sidewall .

Tires are measured on a specifiic width rim. The overall width is what the manufacturer list in their specs.
Look on a tire site, such as The Tire Rack under a certain tire specs. It even tells what rim width was used.
Put it in a wider rim and it will be wider.
Aspect ratio is measured with the tire off the rim. In other words where the bead contacts the wheel .
Tire sizes are nominal figures and can vary by manufacturer. The variation is usually small. Tire sizes are measured under The International Standards Orginization sytem.

Tire Rack is very good for all sorts of tire info.
You could spend a couple of hours there.
