I was just reading a Newsweek article about the Mexican/US Border Fence, and how many people who live right on the Texas and Arizona border either support or oppose the fence for different reasons.

Those that oppose it hardly ever have problems with immigrants crossing on their land, or have houses or front doors within a few hundred feet of where the fence will be installed.

The biggest complaint by many landowners is the lack of funds the goverment is willing to donate when it confiscates land ala eminent domain.

As much as I dislike the incredible flow of illegal immigrants into the US, at the same time, what will a fence or wall do when immigrants make a hole big enough for them to get through, and there are no border security around to catch them?

Think of like fensing in two acres of land, and having 20 dogs running around outside unsupervised. Eventually, one of those dogs will dig under the fence, and you'll have to spend more money fixing all the holes.

Why doesn't the goveremnt invest more money in border security? Why don't land owners who do have problems with tresspassing call officials and get posts on their land?

I'm sure when it comes to border security, there are plenty of researchers out there who would gladly conduct wildlife research while watching the border, as well as plenty of young folks myself would love to walk the desert (or Canada's border).

Or we can just help Mexico build a better economy (like Canada) so immigrants don't need to illegally cross.
