Independent Fog Lights (Rewire) 3/24/06
(Not responsible for any damage to your ride-do at own risk)

Find the white plastic piece with all the wiring going in and out, located on driver side under the dash. See picture 1.

Locate the red wire with silver hashes towards the back of it. It will test for 12v when the headlights are on only. It should test for 12volts even when the fog lights are off.

Cut that wire after the black plastic ring, which is holding a group of wires together. That way you can put it back together if you cut the wrong wire.

Be sure to use the side of the wire that is cut which runs into the relay (the white plastic box)-this end will be connected to the ignition2 wire. The other end gets taped off. (see pic above)

Attach a wire to the wire you just cut and splice into the ignition2 wire (see pic 2). It is a thicker black wire with a red line and located under the steering wheel under the dash.

The ignition2 wire is hot only when ignition is in “run” position. (That way you cannot accidentally leave the fogs on).

That’s all!

What would be the best way to wire the fog lights? And is it a good idea to remove the bumper when installing the lights?

This is for a ZX2 with existing factory foglights, not for adding aftermarket lights.

Damn. But then whats the point of rewiring the foglights?

In factory form, they only come on when the headlights are on and they go off if you switch to highbeams. Many of us mod them to come on/off with the ignition. Many insurance companies give a daytime running light discount for this. Seeing that the mod is basically free, not a bad deal. Not only that, but the car looks cool with the fog lights/parking light on together.

I agree, personally like to drive with the parking and fog lights on. But because my fog lights are aftermarket, and therefore unique to my car, I like them to be independent. So then I can turn them off when I know I'm going to do something stupid. That way my car isn't as easy to recognize.

I just tried this on my 2003 ZX2 with no success. I found the red wire w/ the silver hashes, cut that, and spliced the end that leads into the white box onto a new wire. Then I found the black wire with the red line under the steering wheel and spliced my new wire onto this wire (ignition 2) and reconnected it. Now, it works like stock, with the fog lights only turning on when the lights are on. What did I do wrong?

Did you test the wires for voltage as described in the text? Some of the wires look alike so you really should test them before splicing. It is also easy to connect the wrong end of the cut wire, this is the most common mistake.

I don't have anything to test the voltage, but I cut the right wires according to the tutorial and the pictures that came with it. I'll work on it more tomorrow and see if I did cut the wrong wires.

Under the dash, a white hash will look a lot like a silver hash. Easy enough mistake to make, this is why I wrote the text with the testing proceedure.

i believe that the switch is what controls them... on off etc

no... the way they are saying to do this, it would wire them to your ignition and only go off when the car was off, so basicly making the factory switch useless..

What how-to are you reading? All you are doing to making the foglight relay powered by the ignition wire. The foglight switch grounds it. So, the switch still controls the parking lights and they will work at anytime the key is on and the switch is on.

so my fogs can still be turned off if i see fit...?
