View Full Version : Trans Problem?

I don't know if this is a mechanical or operator problem, but every time I launch from around 800-1200rpm, I feel the car grip, then it kinda dips for just a flinch, and then it hits again, and then grabs just fine. Once I shift it repeats the same behavior in second, and then will be just peachy the rest of the time.
But the weird thing is that it only acts like this if I'm not driving like an ass. If I launch from around 1500-1700, it is smooth all the way up to 7k, slam into 2nd, pop the clutch, squawk it, and it hits perfectly.
Only thing done to the car is an almost finished keman.
Any ideas?

u feel the car ok... do you watch your rpms? what do they look like when you launch at 800? is it fluient with the acceleration?

I haven't. Most of the time it's in situations where I'm buried at a light and can't take off, so I'm paying more attention to not hitting the car in front of me :P
Racing it, I don't watch my tach, but it doesn't sound like any fluctuations in the power delivery.
Perhaps I'll have a good look at it tomorrow night on my way home from work.

does it feel like its bogging down?

Racing - no, perfect.
Not racing - yep, not a ton, but yep.

Grips, dips , hits, flinches, grabs.
Tough to tell what you mean.
Maybe the motor mounts [worn broken] are allowing extra movement, or the clutch disc is grabbing or has worn dampers in it.

Could be that the rpm's are too low. The engine doesn't pull well much under 1500.
"Don't watch tach when racing." Hmm. I aleays watch mine so I know when to shift.

I listen to it. Once the revs are high, I just check to see where I'm at. 99% of the time it only needs another 500 rpm before a shift.

All race cars have tachs or shift indicator lights.

Nah, the ear is a better indicator. I thought you new that.

especially for those deaf racers out there...

1) The s13 I used to drive had no speedometer, so I got used to basing speed off of the tach. Then the dash lights stopped working. Ghetto I know. But after that happened, I could tell by sound when I was doing a perfect 70mph. Call it bullshit if you want, but it got me around with NEVER being pulled over for driving either over or under the speed limit for over 6 months.
2) Yes, but most of my driving takes place in rush hour traffic. Therefore I can only base my info off of feel and sound, because my eyes are too busy trying not to hit something as opposed to watching my tach. As far as my "description" of my feel/sounds, just forget it. I guess I'm just not capable of describing this "problem" that's most likely just my feet not working correctly.

If you couldn't see it, how do you know you were doing a perfect 70 mph?
I was following you and you were all over the map concerning speeds, BTW.
[This makes both of us BS ers!]

Going down the highway there would be an occasional street lamp that I could check the tach and I was always on.
Whatever.
I'm done arguing over nothing. Someone close this thread. Guess this is what I get for asking...
