the official teamzx2 GranTurismo 4 contest

Since GT5/GTHD isn't coming out for another year....lets all gear up for it by dusting off those GT4 discs and start up a running contest. this won't be for a prize...at least for now. we might work out a points system based on total time gap or something...but we'll just run this as a test for now. i'll go ahead and just keep this in one ongoing thread...unless it gets big enough to do a new thread each week. here are the ground rules:

each week will be a new car, on a new track. at least one thing will change each week...a new car on a different track is OK, or a new track with the same car is OK. what determines the next track/car will be up to the winner of the previous week. i'll start out the first one, and each week, the new winner will decide.

the rules will be FIRM. nothing will be changed unless we start getting problems that constitute changes. this will be based upon an honor system...so made up times, cheating, etc will not always be detectable, but will NOT be tollerated. i'm sure we're all grown up enough not to cheat...but i've been proven wrong before.

in order to uphold validity...screenshots of the time and car in action will be appreciated, but not be necissary..not everyone may be able to do this. i know with my slim PS2, i have a USB port, and can simply upload images i take to my computer.

no cheats will be acceptable...meaning money cheats, acceleration cheats, anything you cannot do without the help of CodeBreaker or some other modifying method.

tire wear may be turned off

any tire may be used

you may have as many lap attempts as you please

runs must be made in "practice mode" of the circuits area, to keep start and finish lines consistant...it only costs 5 Cr to run these

all cars must be readily available. if it is a used car, it must be one that shows up often, not just on certain rare days (like the all black race cars that appear on days 694-700). if it is a car you win from a challenge, it must be a reasonable challenge from any of the one make races, beginner, professional, or extreme races. NO endurance race prize cars are accepted, and NO driving mission or drivers license prize cars will be either...unless they can be earned elsewhere (like the Nike car).

everybody must use the same car, and on the same track

all cars must remain stock. you may change the oil, wash the car, change the tires, and the wheels. NO spoilers or other modifications will be allowed. the reason for this, is that i want the races to be about the driver..not the car. when mods are stacked up, it not only becomes expensive, but adds too much to be adjusted on the car.

drivers assists may be left on, such as TC, SC, etc. there is no way to tell if these were used, so they will be allowed.

any adjustments made to cars with performance parts standard (like adjusting downforce, ride height, etc.) may be performed.

i think that about covers most of the things i can forsee needing rules for. if anyone else things we need additions/modifications to these rules, please feel free to post.



so the first car and track i chose, is Infineon Raceway, in the Lotus Elise Sport 190 ('98).

this car and track will be good until sunday night at midnight. the person with the lowest posted time will chose the next car and track within the following 24 hours.

I would take part in this... but... I have no PS2, and my PS3 is a 40GB, which means no backwards compatibility. I do have GT5 Prologue and a 360 with Forza 2 but I guess that doesn't really work haha.

no...i've already discussed with people on the chat how this is to gear up excitement for the upcoming GT5/HD...so forza would be out of the ?. plus, IMO, and tons of other racing purits, GT4>Forza on physics and simulation, especially since on Forza the tracks are TONS smaller/narrower than they are in real life. if you wanna do a forza one..go ahead...but this is for GT4 no questions asked.

Well, after a year and half of nothing but Forza I managed to get a 1'38.6 after 10 laps or so. I've never been very good at GT4 so I have no idea if it's even worth mentioning that time.

I don't care about people seeing my times, it let's me know somewhat where I stand.

you can transfer saved videos and pictures from photo mode or replay mode onto the game..then there's a function where you can transfer them from the PS2's memory card to a thumb drive. i'll post a how to when i find one.

I have extensive time in with the GT series, and Forza no doubt has way better physics (their physics engine updates 360 times per second... crazy). GT has always been its own style of game though, and it's great on that alone.

BTW, those are some decent times. If I could play GT4, I would be all over this.

Ha, I've still go the best time so far. We had this huge storm come through and we lost our power, I haven't been able to play since I guess I'll try again since the power is back and hopefully get a lower time.

After 21 laps today and only coming within 0.14 seconds of my best lap, I think I'm going to have to call mine at 1'36.770

are you comparing forza2 to GT4? that's like apples to oranges. GT4>the first forza. i hate how the tracks seem sooo small on forza. like the nurburgring has NO fudge room on forza...but in GT4 it's down to the INCH the correct scale. forza just seemed like a cartoon. also...the selection of cars in GT4>forza. and i'm all about keeping the cars as stock as possible to compete..doing better with less basically, letting my skill get better...and i'm not into the whole body kits and engine swaps thing that forza has. IMO, GT4 is a purist racing game, and forza is more of a tuner game.

I don't know... Forza'a Lugana Seca seemed to be a lot more accurate than GT4. At least as far as recall, driving on the actual track.

yeah, my 1:36.599 still can improve, but i don't know by how much. the damned ghost car kept messing me up on turns 2 and 4....that's where i can improve. turn 2 i'm coming in at the very low end of 3rd gear...maybe i'll try coming into the corner at a different line and bump it down to 2nd. i doubt i can get into the 1:35 territory.

btw..i've found that on the long sweeping left after the left to rights....leave it in 3rd and let it bounce at around 7500rpm...you lose too much shifting into 4th on that bend. as soon as you straighten out wide for the straight...upshift and it should exit you out of the corner a bit over 105. also, i brake early before the S curve...and take it in 3rd gear flat out at about 5k rpm. as i'm exiting, i'm up in the powerband easily, and it makes the corners go a lot smoother without transfering weight to the back and understeering.

Until then I will play and enjoy it as much as I can bear without upgrading.

No need to limit laps. If you sacrifice the time to practice you should be able to win.

6:38.69x...i won't get pics til i get at elast 6:38. at one point, like bernard..i was like 4 seconds ahead, then i messed up. for some reason, i can nail the first half...then just before the Caroussel i end up shaving off speed somehow and my ghost car takes the lead. i'm frustrated with it now..maybe after a few beers tonight i'll have better luck.

btw..im using the car at full default settings now. i had the suspension stiffer when i got 6:48...now i'm 10 seconds faster with default suspension settings.

Guys I just realized that your screen shots include the name of the car... I have no way of taking that picture due to the fact I do my racing in free practice and this is where is shows the best lap. I DQ, my time for not being able to provide credible proof.

yeah, it's ok...we're basing this thing off the honor system anyway, and it's not for any real prize. it's easy to get a screen shot like i have, though. since we do all of the races in Practice mode (the one that costs only 5 Cr.) you can get your current fastest times. i'm not sure how long they stay up..because i've done some fast times, turned off the PS2, came back to the track with the same car, and the last times i had were erased.

but if you want to get pics of the screen i have been taking pics of...it's one of the options before you race. basically, chose your car, then go to the track. where it gives you the option of "a spec, b spec, options, settings, view replay, and standings" click standings..or rankings..forgot what it's called. it'll have a small image of a 3 tier platform where you click it. once there, it'll tell you the fastest lap you did each time you attempted the track (started over)...and list the name of the car..with the track's name at the top.

i can get pics, and write up a follow through on the process if there are any questions!

Hint: Nurburgring 24 Hour Endurance Set-up
Obtain the 2004 Ford GT LM Race Car Spec II (the white and black car in the opening sequence) from the Professional Events-GT World Champion race. That race is a ten race marathon (totalling 136 laps on ten different tracks).

Buy everything available for the car -- importantly the Super Hard Racing Tires (R1s). Set the "Auto Transmission" feature to a value of 18. Equip the R1 tires and get ready for at least twelve hours (of sped up time) of hell.

You must do the 24 hour endurance race in B-Spec mode with the 2004 Ford GT LM Race Car Spec II in order to guarantee a long hard fought win within thirteen hours real time instead of twenty four hours real time.

In B-Spec mode, you have the option to speed up the race by entering the Race Monitor Screen by pressing R1. Then, hold L1 and use the D-pad Left or D-pad Right to go from real time up to three times normal speed.

At the beginning of the race, set the auto pilot to a value of 5 (Push) and turn the overtake feature on by pressing TRIANGLE. Once you get ahead of the pack and have a decent lead, turn off overtake and set the autopilot to 2 (Cruise). You should only have to pit every three to four laps.

Get everything every time that you pit (tires and fuel). Set the autopilot back to 2 (Cruise) once you leave the pit. Continue this strategy until the end of the race. This will net you a Formula One car.

cote d azur with the pennzoil nissan skyline jgtc car. my favorite track and a car that can be adjusted. pretty sure everyone can be satisfied with this one.

*edit: make the car the falken gt-r race car. it is alot cheaper and i didn't realize there are two pennziol jgtc cars.

Was going to report my 1:26.147. But that's with the pennzoil car. I think I found the best line though. Have to see how much that changes with the falken car.

Quick hint: For the hill climb, it's better if you brake early and accelerate before you clip the apex. You have to make the turn a bit wider though.


I never did look for the black cars. Have to see how much longer I have till they appear again.

miss the cars the first time, wait another 694 days and you can buy them
again.

i was CLOSE to breaking 1.25.xx but i just got fed up because i kept messing up corner 3 and going off into the dirt. if i didn't do that, i'd mess up entering the tunnel and hit the wall. i adjusted camber, ride height, spring rate, and sway bars...but i got better times with it in default settings.

my best was a 1:28.5xx. it wasn't fast enough to even take a picture of it. the first few turns were KILLING my times.

yeah, the first 2 corners i'd take flat out...had to cut the first one way early, so you can be lined up for the jump on the second one..or else you'd be off the road when you landed. the third was coming down a hill...so i just held down the accelerator while giving the brakes a little tap to bring the car into the apex. almost the whole course i was on the brakes while on the gas still to keep the car level and into the revs. my right thumb was killing me after 14 laps...from having the knuckle on the gas and the tip of my thumb feathering the brakes.

Ok. I'm back. That car has a tendency to snap the rear out if you even "think" about turning while on the brakes. It's also a heavy car too though. Can't remember what my times is. I remember thinking I can do better though. I'll post it next time.
