I have been surfing around the site and it seems that it’s not too hard to work on a MTX tranny. I’ve spent most my time on the engine but I’m having an intermittent problem with getting it in second gear, seems to me the synchro is going. So I was thinking instead of spending $800 to $1000 on getting the tanny done maybe I could do it myself. Seeing how I’m not going to drag race, I’m setting my car up for the street and Auto Cross; I could put a Phantom Grip in while it’s apart. And still be $500 to $700 ahead of the game.

My question, is this a doable plan or am I over my head. I have already built the engine, did the ATX to MTX swap, redone the suspension, and working on a turbo setup. So I’m pretty good with the wrenches but I have never work on a tranny before.

I have done most of my own work including the building the engine, but if I was to rebuild the tranny I would just buy the needed parts, and bring the tranny and parts to a transmission.

Them having the tranny off the car makes their lives about 5000% easier and the price will reflect it. My friend has his Chevy transmission rebuilt for $50.

I would look into swapping to the MTX75 with an actual LSD. Pretty cheap and realllly reliable option.

working on your tranmission isnt to hard depending on how far you want to dig into it. my pinion shaft blew out of my trans caused by the pin that secures it sliding out and it only cost me $60 to fix it with junkyard parts and a diff without gears donated by a very good guy(ed_flip). i replaced the bellhousing, pinion gears, diff and a taller 5th gear.
heres the link for more on how to take your trans apart.

You will need a press to get the gars and synchronizers apart from the shaft[s].
We can't tell for sure what you are capable of.
With enough time and tools, I think you will do fine, because your attitude its right and have some wrench experience.
Get every manual you can [and CD manuals too].
Double check everything. Before you seal it up, make a dry run of assembly.
Use a dedicated gear oil, not ATF.
Hopefully, the walk throughs are still available.
Once the trans is together and in the car, it is too late. You really have to be sure and happy first. Take an extra day and look close .

Well that was what I was thinking. I have time. The car has been in limbo for a year do to family, work, and life in general. I have it in the garage now pulled the front end off for the turbo and started putting that together. So there is no time line. I have a welder, compressor, grinder, and very big hammers if needed. I’ve built other cars and bikes. So I know my way around machinery. With the correct documentation and some good advice from time to time I think I can do it.
