Drive like you have a glass of water on the dash.
Don't go over 55mph on the highways.
Walk whenever you can or bike.
Carpool
Keep up on regular maintanance (oil changes etc)

New spark plugs [Motorcraft stock ones]
A clean air filter.
Tires inflated 2-4 lbs over stock [cold].
Maybe you need a new O2 sensor [just the front first one].
Use 5-20 oil. Motorcraft is excellent oil, as are their oil filters.
Use minimal throttle to accelerate. This is huge for our car's gas mileage. And you don't really lose a lot of power, either.
Get rid of the resonators in the stock intake. There are many ways around this.

Also let your engine warm up before you drive around. When the car first starts its in closed loop mode until the ecu measures correct opperating conditions. You notice this with a higher idle for the first few minutes. Its also running rich, well imagin a car already running rich because its ignoring the O2 sensors at first, and then you step on the gas. Obviously you will be using extra gas, so might as well let it idle an extra few minutes.

Man I use to drive my MTX for a month on a tank. I got 37-38mpg highway and easily 27-28mpg in the city. You'd be suprised what SCT and a K&N drop-in will do for you. Combine that with regular upkeep, replacing plugs, oil/filter changes, running 89octane w/10 ethanol (mid-grade), replacing the PCV, fuel filter etc and you will see an improvement. You can't drive it like you stole it everywhere either, even on the highway 65mph is plenty fast. Even my wife's ATX gets 35mpg highway easily but probably only 25mpg in the city.

An engine warms up faster when driven. Closed loop is controlled by the oxygen sensor,it will heat up faster. You get 0 mpg when the engine is idling.
Stopping and starting are killers on mpg. Look ahead and try to keep under motion. Coast up to a stop light, don't drive up to it and slam on the brakes.
Combine your trips.
Educate that right foot, it is the biggest gas saver of all.

Do NOT let your engine warm up before driving it, unless you are in Antarctica.
