i got a 1997 Kia sephia. (manual) and got just a few problems, one of which i may need a bit guidance on. the engine in the Kia is very, very simular to the zx2. dohc 1.8.

heres the problem. while applying a load, the car handles and drives very well, however, when at a idle it wants to stumble and stall out. when i tinker on it. heres what i find

1. while engine running at idle. i pul the MAF, and it either stalls out, or actully runs better. so my guess is the MAF is doing its job.

2. i unplug the throttle position sensor, then plug it back, it runs good at idle for a short time.

so my conclusion is it is either the TPS, or the IAC.

so can anybody tell me how close i am, before i start spending un-nessary money just to get this thing running right?

I would say pull the intake and clean it out along w/ the tb. Might be some blockage not allowing enough air in at idle.

Let me get this straight if you unplug the maf sometimes it will stall and sometimes it wont?If thats the case it should stall out when it is unplugged. So your maf is bad.

it seems i got the one kind of car, and year , that all junkyards far and wide seem not to have for some reason.
ive narrowed it down to the MAF and the TPS. and both are very expensive

There are 2 sephia's at the junkyard, both are 97 I believe. Is it the V6? If not, I'll get a MAF for you.

Here is my advice I would do. First of all I would check the IAC(Idle Air Control Motor). Based on this it would be build up with carbon and when it comes to a idle it does spin out like its suppose to. Also if you can check with a dvom(Digital volt ohm meter) I would check the voltage going through the Tps. It should be a range of 0-5. 0 when close and near 5 when Wot. Also for you maf..i would use a cleaner that CRC has out there to clean it up. Is it when the car is only warm it does it? All the time? Figure i would give you this info to play with

for a reference that motor is pretty much a Mazda BP motor. AKA 90s protege, 91-96 Escort Gt. Some guys on FEOA.net are using that cars tranny. I think the main diffence on the engine, dont quote me, is the cams are not as good as the EGT and Pro. I dont know if the MAF or anything would work but I know it might be cheaper. Hope this helps. ask around on FEOA. they may be able to help you out
