With the clutch pedal down the engine runs but when you let off the clutch the car dies. Mechanic says that it is transmission related. Anybody know what other transmissions will fit because I am having a hard time locating a used one.

Without any serious work? None. Best bet would be to keep looking for a used one.

Now, are you trying to put it in gear when it does this? Or does it do it just pumping the clutcht pedal when stationary?

Well, that could easily be crankwalk. It was common enough in the S/R version. Some of them got a bad batch of engines because some union retard installed the wrong thrust bearing. Ford knows of the issue. They may fix it for free. That is, if you can find a dealer that knows a ZX2 is an Escort and not a Focus.

Yeah, if it was in gear I could see why it would be a tranny issue. However, not being in gear doesn't sound like it.

Let me clarify before someone corrects me by going into details. When I say tranny issue, I mean not an issue with the gears that might not be able . . .

Lets simplify it before I get too detailed. It might not need a whole new transmission.

Fast has a good guess - it sure sounds like crankwalk.
What happens is the thrust bearing wears, and the crankshaft goes back and forth too much. Actuating the clutch will make it move. This causes the crankshaft position sensor to not work right .
But maybe it's an odd problem with the clutch pedal 'neutral' switch [not the starting switch]. [Clutch up or down simulates neutral - same circuit.]
You can pry the crank back and forth at the front pulley to check for crankwalk.
Check out the clutch switch, if necessary.

Well it just so happens i just replace my motor because of my Thrust bearing going bad. I had a similar problem. My check engine light was on and when i changed the camshaft sensor the car ran but stuttered horibbly. When i unplugged the sensor it ran but not great. and when backing up and letting off the clutch some times it cut off. it allturned out to be a bad thrust bearing. Now my car runs like a champ. needs a clutch slave cylder and master though. hope this helps.

O its a 2000 MTX by the way

Diagnise the problem first...

It could be crankwalk with the CPS getting out of line when the clutch is engaged and the crank moves fore or aft. You can diagnose this problem by having someone watch the position of the crank pulley while the driver is trying to engage the clutch.

However, it could be bent shift forks with the transmission stuck in two gears locking up the gearbox or it could be a seized input shaft bearing. You can diagnose this problem by putting the car up on jackstands and removing the wheels. If the transmission is jammed, the car should still stall with anlmost no load on the transmission.

My suggestion would be to fully remove the transmission and diagnose the problem before proceeding...
