SO, I've been applying to a bunch of shops and only doing follow up calls on the ones I really want to work at. ANYHOW, back on March 8th I handed in an application to start as a Painters Assistant. I never called back tho to check on the position as I was planning on stopping in later this week.

Well, today around 11am I received a call from one of the shops I wouldn't mind working at to schedule an interview! I told them I had nothing planned today and after a minute or so he came back on the phone and said hows 2pm TODAY sound? I agreed and it was set.

Dressed up for the interview, went VERY smoothly. Seems like a cool guy (manager of shop) and he explained all the job duties, benefits, pay, dress code, etc.

Everything is relatively standard to other offers that I declined (didn't really like the other shops). $10/hr to start for 1st 90 days. Then I get evaluated and pay increases and benefits start. Then another 90 days I get re-evaluated and pay changes as they see fit.

The nice things:
Shop is FULLY heated and air conditioned. - Perfect temp when I was there
Shop is new as it just opened a few months ago. All high quality stuff, roughly 30,000 sq ft.
Shop is VERY clean. This will also teach me to become more organized which is a plus.
Its not too bad of a drive (25-30mins). All the roads are in great shape.

I'll know sometime Wednesday if I got the job or not. They are waiting for results on a drug (piss) test and my background/driver license report.

BTW: The place is http://sunmotorcars.com/ . They are a large dealership that does Audi, Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes. Next door a Lexus dealer is going in and they are discussing with them about taking care of their collision/refinishing work.

Congrats. Hope you get it and everything works out. I just landed my dream job a couple weeks ago. I work at Superchips now and I'm loving it. I've never had a job where I looked forward to going to work until now, lol. Hope it's the same for you.

Nope, all "back" roads (if you consider 114 a back road). Drive 3/10 of a mile down my road and then its all rt 114 for 11 miles and then 1 mile on Woods Drive.

Only time I'll be on the pike is maby for lunch. The hours are 8-5 with 1 hour for lunch. Plenty to choose from out on the pike for lunch compared to out at WyoTech with choices limited to McDonalds, Chinese, or WallMart... LOL.

The fact that its a new clean shop would interest me.

Pay is "eh", considering you have an education, right?

Education yes, "experience" no. $10 to start is relatively standard in this field, especially because I am just an assistant painter (basically apprentice). I pretty much shadow the 2 main painters and do masking for them. Eventually when both the manager and I both feel that I am ready to move up, I can. The $10 is temp till the 90 days is up. A friend of mine is making I believe $12.50 now where he works (and that was 2 months ago... haven't talked to him for a while). I'm not expecting top pay right now... Hell, I had to bust my ass when I was younger at other places doing food services making 5.15/hr at Ski Roundtop, $5.15/hr + tips at a Pizza/Sub shop delivering, or landscaping at 7.25/hr. All of those jobs were only 2-4 times a week.

I don't have a major rent/own a place, just assist the parents some for bills. No "major" bills, the highest one is roughly $7,000 which is my portion of the student loans and its going to take a few thousand to get my 240 in nice shape and on the road.

The entire shop being heated/air conditioned tops it off as far as I'm concerned. WyoTech was pushing near 100* in the shops multiple times, and in the winter their heat sucked. The booths could hardly make it to a sufficient cure temp for painting so everything took longer to cure.

Good luck.

If I ever need paintwork, I'll come to your shop (since you'll give me a good price ;) )
