Hello all,

Sorry if anyone is being anooyed by me making post, I just figured this is the correct forum to post my problems other than killing time in which the old post was just to say that I got street tuned.

Now,
I have an unusuall tapping sound in motor. Is it in the head, is it in the block, its hard to say. I took a hose and tryed to hear, the noise is most pronounced right at oil filler cap. ITs also loud right under the UDP ( crank gear)

What Ive done so far:

> Checked oil level, was fine.

>Start the car up, let it reach operating tempuratures, I actually drove it around the block just fine. ( I didnt take a look at oil pressure while driving though)

> Then the "tapping" starts after it gets warm,

?The noise is at idle, The noise ONLY happens or is Loud @ 1500 RPMS, anything below, the noise goes away or at least you cannot hear it, anything past 1500 you cannot hear it.

>The car has a slight surge in idle(could be in tune) so the noise will come on and go away ( rpm activated)

>> I assumed it could be the water pump bearing, Took the serpentine belt off ,and still doesn the noise. I pushed the clutch in , still does the noise.

>> I pushed clutch in , noise still proceded.

>> oil pressure warmed up is about 22 ish psi @ 1100 rpm ( car kinda idles high)

>>Oil pressure @ 4,000 rpms is about 59 psi ( reved up in nuetral )

I doubt this has anything to do with it, but my fuel pressure gauge reads 70+ psi at idle, Yes SUPER HIGH, ill call my tuner!!

>> Oil is 5W-30 Royal Purple Fully synthetic

>> to eliminate anything in the drive belt area alternator, pulleys etc, I took the serpentine belt off and started the car, noise still is there.

> again I doubt its the problem, but im trying to give any possible detail, The starter is crapping out on me, makign weird noises, sometimes its grinds when I try to start the car.

>> I must also mention, I have Powders UDP, had it for a year now, The timing belt is kinda wore out, mainly because I tightened it too tight, and its riding on the outter edge of the gears, so I need to replace it soon.

>>>> **update, drained oil NO shavings or anything weird **

Heres a video of the tapping

The only thing I failed to do when I built my motor was billet gears in the oil pump. However, I don't want to rip the pump out if its not the problem.

How fast does the tapping occur?
At first I thought it was the gap between your buckets/shims and cams... not set right, but if it only happens at 1500rpm... not all the time, then that's most likely a no... hm... I wouldn't think its the gears in the oil pump either... dam, I'm stumped... hope you find out soon bro.

When you knocked the VCT solenoid off the housing , did you plug the top hole or just leave the plunger/spring inside . It could be the plunger pecking on the cover from a pulsing of the oil pressure .

Wow, I never thought of that, All I did was knock the sylenoid off and put a freeze plug in the valve cover. You DID mention this before to me, but I couldnt understand what Iw as suppos to do....

Whatrever it is, I think its picking up as knock and the car wont go past 4K while driving the first time I drove it .

I just dont understand, that VCT has been the way it is for a year now.

Remove the plunger /spring . The hole is .440" X .580" , I cut a plug 1/2 " X 5/8" approx. doesn't have to fit tight . The plug will set just below the edge . Use a punch with a point , go around the edge and peen it in 4-6 spots , that'll hold it from popping out . The bottom stays open to oil the valve train , it also oils the VCT spool and cam journal .

Welp, pulled the cams, all the buckets are in tact, no scoring. All the valve srpings look in tact and in place, keepers are on all valves....

Ill plug the VCT thing John told me, I toojk the spring out.
What kinda of plug did you use jon? Some sorta metal ?

JohnP

I picked up some aluminum rod from Home Depot , cut the length needed , insert then peen around the hole . When you punch/peen just back from the edge of the hole , the metal is forced into the hole at the edge , securing whats in the hole .

I got it right. I can't believe you guys didn't know that was a rod bearing tap from the vid. I've heard a lot of them since most of the vehiles my family owned over the years were GM.
