Ugh, I have a Pomeranian-poodle, and hes a little bitch. Trust me, the only reason he is here is because he came with woman.. :eyes:

Now that we have a house, I plan do get a real dog.. Probably a short haired border collie.

Pomeranians are smart, and they will only be yappy if the owner rewards the behavior.

Man Purse, what a novel idea. You know I saw a Ferrari bag at the Puma store and I was thinking of a reason to get it. I'd be so cool.

Border Collies are great dogs, if they have a purpose. They need a job or a duty, or they will find one of their own. I had one once that turned into the neighborhood bad-ass dog. Seriously, he could whoop two pit bulls at once, and never bleed. The funniest thing was when my dad would go down the road to a neighbor, and their half breed wolf, knowing the border collie would be right behind my father, would sit at the front door, with it's tail between it's legs, begging to come inside.

He eventually started growling at people though, and we had to put him down. :'(

But no. My wife to be has been wanting to have a baby lately. I am NOT ready for a kid anytime soon. I asked if I got her a puppy if she would leave me alone for four years and she agreed. We live in an apartment so it needs to be small.

There are many other smaller dogs that IMO would be a much better dog.

Small yappy white things annoy me.

Oh wow, the only problem she has is trying to herd things. She will literally move you (or other animals or inanimate objects) to where she wants you to go. :sheep:

My dog, Dante, an American Cocker Spaniel, is the only dog anyone could ever want as a companion. I heard him bark for the 6th time Saturday night. He's smart, but plays dumb, because he knows he's got the look locked-in lol. He's not a trick dog. He can be walked without a leash as long as there's no ducks. He'll swim for up to an hour straight to follow ducks around the pond lol. He's a lover. I just snapped a coupla pics. He was napping:

If you were a single guy getting a pom, then I would say, yes, it would make you appear gay, lol.

But you have a wife, so that's different.

Personally I don't care for Poms. Have you looked at Papillons?? They are very bright dogs, never met a yappy one, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. Small, and still cute.

Any dog smaller than 20lbs should be for your kid, any dog smaller than 10lbs should be for your wife. Dog's natural instinct is to hunt, over time human beings learned how to modify that natural hunting instinct to make effective herding dogs. If a dog can't hunt, herd, protect the family it won't be part of my home. If you want something that small and worthless, and the only purpose it serves is companionship, get a cat. Maybe not even a cat, even cats still have a natural instinct to hunt, atleast they will kill vermin. A rabbit, even a rat would suit you just fine.

The purple bandanna came on him. He has a checkered flag bandanna now. His name is Romeo, pronounced like the Shakespeare character, but inspired by Alfa Romeo. After the car ride home, I was tempted to name him Ralph :pissed:. Need to clean my seats now.
So far, he wines when beings stepped on by a fat Pug, but other than that,he doesn't barks, cries or anything. He is cute and playful and I do not regret buying him.

Oh great, another puppy mill in the making.

Please have him neutered. There are already too many animals in the shelter. If you are breeding properly, then the stud fee should only break you even after you do all the genetic health testing that should be done before even attempting it.

I can only imagine the kind of breeder you got him from.

That aside neutering will prevent many bad habits, as well as get rid of the chance of testicular cancer which is very prominent in dogs.

So I happen to be passionate and INFORMED about animals, proper breeding practices, and health in general. I have been in the veterinary field for 10 years and it's something that I feel strongly about.

People here are always so eager to have opinions on everything else, this just happens to be one that strikes a tune with me, and I choose to voice mine.

I was about to ask you why you think it's reasonable for this guy to start up his own 'breading mill' until I noticed you're from Ohio. This is a land I've traveled to on several occasions and unfortunately you and your fellow residents view a pet as merely an object rather than a family companion. I'm not trying to generalize all Midwestern inhabitants but in general your pets there see a worse quality of life.

I bought a Pomeranian for my girlfriend a couple years ago. Its a good dog, but it has its flaws. The whole house breaking thing is an issue. It forgets sometimes. Other than that its a good dog. You don't see them as adoption dogs very often. They are sought after dogs and usually they are only found by breeders.

This whole puppy mill thing is a huge stretch and if you've been in the Vet business for a while then you would know. This guy that posted this original thread is a normal guy.

Enough with that though, here are some pictures of my girlfriends dog.

I guess people outside of Ohio think that anyone that wants to breed a dog are ultimately setting up a puppy mill. By the way, the dog I bought for my girlfriend came from a Pomeranian Breeder outside of Toledo. It wasn't a Puppy mill and it was a clean normal household with above average living conditions for the dogs. They built and indoor/outdoor house for the dogs to play/live in.

Also, Davey, look at those pictures I just posted above. Looks like an object doesn't he? Anyone in their right mind would see that as a family pet, not an object.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I did my research on him and we made our decision to get a Pomeranian based on the behavior that we read about. We bought him because we wanted a little dog, to love and to spoil, and to postpone and fulfill my fiancées baby itch. He is CKC registered, and I personally think it is a waste of money to get a registered dog, if you do not breed it. We did not get him merely to profit, but we don't want to ruin our chances to profit either. I would like some more information on the genetic testing if you could PM me though. I would love to have your advice.

You have to look at the context. The OP stated that he's intending to breed the dog for the purpose of recouping spent monies. This is entirely the wrong motivation for breeding your pet.

Also, I stated that I'm not trying to generalize the Midwest. It's just been from my experience of living in various states that pets there are not treated with the same level of caring and compassion as in some other parts of the US. You may be different. I don't know how you treat your pets.

Okay, I'm not going to go back and forth forever about this, but I just want to help get some education on breeding out there. It's not that a lot of people are out there to purposefully do this and not care about the animals, a lot of them just don't know!

It's true some people genuinely don't care about the animals, and are just in it for the money. True puppy mills. Then there are people who are just uninformed, usually known as backyard breeders.

So, here are a few links that might interest you and it would be my friendly suggestion that you read a lot about the subject. You may find some of it surprising and interesting.

Info on buying a purebred pup (I realize you have already done this, but it will also give you a reference point): http://www.danemist.com/ABCs/BuyingaPurebredPup.html

10 rules of ethical breeder: http://www.phouka.com/dogs//bdr_ethics.html

Recognizing an unethical breeder: http://www.phouka.com/dogs//bdr_irres.html

Question a breeder should ask you: http://www.phouka.com/dogs//bdr_owner.html

Puppy selection considerations: http://www.doglogic.com/pupconsd.html

FYI, Registration doesn't mean a lot. With the CKC all it requires is that the dog be pure bred to get a registration number. AKC typically requires registered parents as well.

No registration gives any proof to the quality, conformation to breed standard, temperament, or health of the pup.

It does however provide you the ability to show in the ring to PROVE all of the above.

Both of my dogs are registered one with the KC (in England) and the other with the AKC. I never had any intention of breeding either of them. In fact one could produce deaf and/or blind pups because of a certain gene that he carries, but somebody not educated about the breed would know that and there are many deaf/blind dogs produced because of that. I bought registered dogs only because reputable breeders compete in show, were not selling for the money, and bred for the love of the breed. Finding a reputable breeder who does NOT have registered dogs would be difficult.

I still ended up with one dog who had a genetic defect (retained testicle) and would not have made good breeding stock period nor could I show him which had been a consideration.

ETA: In the future I will also rescue as I don't intend on ever breeding and there are SO many dogs out there that need homes. I didn't rescue this time because I had a newborn and didn't want a dog with an unknown history.

Anyway, that's my schpiel. I'm going to refrain from posting anymore in this thread, only because again, I am passionate about the subject and it frustrates me to read about it. I've said my piece and put the information out there. The rest is up to you! :)

Hope you enjoy him either way, he's cute.

Your right. I failed to read the rest of what you wrote. I saw that you said that I was from Ohio and this is what we did. Once I read that I stopped reading and didnt see the generalizing part you wrote. I did that out of anger I suppose. I agree there are people here that do it to make money and they do it within poor living conditions for the animals, but I'm positive that it takes place the same throughout the country.

I know my neighbor bread his husky once and sold the pups and kept one. Excellent living conditions for them too. My girlfriends cousin wants to breed his husky too, but it has to be the right female with the right living conditions. My point is, of the people I personally know, they aren't trying to make any sort of puppy mill out of their pets. As far as I know living within Ohio, the pet owners are good people just like the other states. Sometimes you do find those morons though. They can be found in every state though.

Also, we had my girlfriends dog neutered (more towards Jen. He was a little to horny and we didn't intend on breeding him anyway.)

Not terribly, no. The calico and tortoiseshell coats are carried by the females of the species only. Well, that is a lie...it *is* possible for a male to have it but it is very, very rare and they are usually sterile. Anyway, this color almost always only occurs in females and the dilute variant of the tortoiseshell is far less common that than standard tortoiseshell colors.

Here's the virtually only female colors:

Wow. Kitty's brother has the dilute tortoiseshell coat. They were abondoned, and my neighbor brought Kitty over and told me she's only staying a coupla days. That was 3 years ago lol. Anyway, I'll tell her she's got something special.

i own a reverse calico (callie). instead of white with brown/black spots, she's black with brown spots and a white tuft on her chest. she's my baby

and no, she's not a tortoiseshell. mostly black with brown patches, not that blurred shit on the above cat. my buddy steve, however, has a diluted tortoiseshell named Pepper
