what he said...but to explain it .. what it does is alter the exhaust cam timing adavance and retard to allow the burnt gasses remain in the cyl just a lil bit longer to burn off more of the pollutants and such.. has a MARGINAL power effect thus differing from vtec which is a different cam lobe mainly for power curve

this isn't our engine and isn't exactly how our VCT is controlled, but the idea and basics are still there...

so you can fix one by buying cam gears??

Wow, it amazes me how many people post questions in this section that are explained in the very thread stuck at the top of this section.

Many people eliminate the VCT on our exhaust cam.
It is eliminated when you step on the gas, anyway, so I don't get it.
It can help fuel economy a bit.
I wish our variable cam was the INTAKE, instead. big power and drivability gains are to be had.
No, we can't switch over or modify our cars for this.

Exhaust VCT was originally developed for the Zetec in Europe, in particular for the Mondeo. The idea was to replace the EGR with considerable retardation of the exhaust cam to get a EGR like effect. In theory it would allow use of greater duration of the intake cam while meeting emissions. The idea is that Eurpeans like to drive at sustained highway speeds, want good economy and care less about acceleration.
If you compare the specs of the intake cams between the ZX2 (Cougar, Contour) around model year 2000 with the focus you find the following information. ZX2 Intake cam (214 deg @ 0.050 with 0.366 lift) vs. Focus intake cam (206 deg @ 0.050 with 0.353" lift.)
All things being equal, the stock ZX2 engine does rev slightly better to high rpm (although the stock Focus exhaust manifold is better) but the focus engine makes better midband torque.
The benefits are minimal, which is probably one reason Ford discontinued exhaust VCT.

however, I can assure everyone that it DOES affect the power as well. The stupid fuck that owned my S/R before me removed it without reprogramming it and with basically NO mods.
I just CANT do better than 16.3 on the quartermile. With my 98 I was able of 15.85

new question!!!!!
okay im buying new cam gear and cam shafts should i buy the vct again or can i use the stock one that already one it?

omg. n00b. VCT = sensor + solenoid. if you put a camgear, you remove the solenoid. so it will not work anymore. the sensor you need to keep it but it is useless.

The '98 had better gearing for the 1/4 .

man... I am just not going to discuss that again here... just find the thread "are 98s better than blablabla.."
+ the S/R PCM with the *10*% power added WOULD BE SUPPOSED to compensate for the gearing
