I highlighted in the picture below what I am looking for. That piece of weatherstripping on my z has developed patches of a lighter color...almost looks like mold or something. Anyone know where I can get a new one or have the ford part number for it? I need it for both sides, just that one piece.

Maybe its a pa thing...I noticed it on a lot of z's in my area...figured someone else had to have this issue before

I have this problem as well, and have seen it on many other Z's.

On the old site someone had listed the part number. I failed to write it down, so hopefully someone can come through with this. If i remember correctly, they were like $70 a pop.

It's a common thing. You can try Mother's Back to Black, it's a polishing formula made to work on problems like yours. I have personally never tried it but maybe someone else on here has.

I tried it... it looks alright, but you can still see the spots showing through. Definitely not a fix, more of a temporary cover so if you're about 20 yards away you won't notice. And if it rains it streaks a bit down your windows.

The problem is just a bad vinyl coating , my car is garaged 98% of the time . The coating covers a metal trim piece . If you gentle pull on the foam door seal it comes out of the trim . Once you have it pull out of the way you can see the screws to remove the trim .

I took the car to a lot of shows , used Black Shoe Polish on that trim , best thing I could find . I finely got around to replacing it , cost was $70.00 a piece back in ' 03 , don't know what it is now .

It happens on every Z. Nothing works to "fix it". Some have painted theirs black and cleared over it. If you don't want to pay around $150.00 for a set, I'd suggest you try something like that...

Yeah especially since buying another set from ford will just turn to shit in no time anyway since its a bad vinyl coating problem

What kind of paint would you use to paint it though?

Black spray paint. I just did it a few weeks ago.

Sand it smooth though, you can see the spots where the coating came off and where it hasn't through the black. So, quick sanding and then tape everything off really good. Black spray paint, and you're done.

Use proper spraying technique though.. Hold the can about a ten inches away and don't just cake the shit on there. Do it in coats. It'll come out as good as you make it really.

Give it a few days before leaning on it or anything. Mine was still a tad soft the next day.

$70 a pop means $35 for me. I might just get these before I put them back on after paint.

Those parts list for 90.30 each and my cost is 10% on top of the 54.18 cost price. Where'd you guys get yours?

I have a solution for all of u that isn't just a temp fix :)

I was looking at these last year... they are called ventshades... plastic covers that go over that part... they won't go bad and actually look good... I'd try em out if I were you... they are only like $50 for a pair shipped!!! way cheaper and look better IMO... I will do it... eventually, concentrating on the go... then comes the show ;)

Why? I think they do a good job covering it up and don't look bad, add it a bit of style if anything to stupid light spots on the rubber and cracks... at 1/3 the price... it's not a bad option... and you can open your windows when it rains a little bit and rain wont get in... I'll do it probably next year... so guess I'm getting banned then...

I buy direct from Ford Distribution Center in Detroit , my cost was $51.85 ea. , free shipping.

I am fixing it by covering it up w/style :) haha... and at half to 1/3 the cost... sorry I can't justify spending $100+ on melted tires....

Then sand and paint the weather stripping...................

painting doesn't really fix it either... but I might give it a try... any recommendations on the paint? I've never painted rubber before, I was afraid of cracking, that's why I never did it, but then again, at this point, i don't think it could look much worse...

Kilroy

regular black spray paint will work, that rubber doesn't really have a chance to flex much.

the ventshades cause too much aerodynamic drag...beings that our cars are uber fast, they might break or fly off.

Paint FTW!

Sand the rubber off. It is metal underneath.

i would try clearing them also to make sure the paint don't do it as well. if you buy a new set you should use clear on it to see if that might help stop the problem ahead of time.

Go to the first page , I tell how to take the trim off . Tape the fender off at the end of the trim , it's sharp and will scratch the paint .

black shoe polish.

JohnP
05-15-2008, 04:45 PM
That actually works pretty good , I used it for a few years till i replaced the trim . Black paste is the best , get a good brand as it has a lot of oils in it .
