View Full Version : Warped rotors?

I installed hawk hps pads and new autozone rotors up front about 10 months ago. Now everytime I step on the brakes at highway speeds, I'm feeling vibrations. I would hope the rotors weren't warped ALREADY, since most of my driving is highway and I'm not extremely hard on the brakes. My last brake bleed job might not have been the best - but would that somehow cause vibrations? So, do you guys think my rotors are warped, and if so, can I just get new rotors and keep the pads I'm currently using?

They could be warped. I can warp a set of rotors in a very short time.
The hub has to be perfectly clean, as well as the mating surface of the rotor. A little grease or anti seize should be lightly smeared on the face.
Torquing the wheels slowly up to spec is important. A day or two of easy driving should seat things in.
Sometimes, rotors get pad deposits on them and they need a few good HARD stops from high speed to clean them up. Surprisingly, this can work.
After 5 years [rotors], I get a little vibration at high speed medium to hard stops. It's never felt normally, so I don't bother with it yet.

There are rotors and there are rotors. Some are better than others.
Did you thoroughly clean the rotor when you installed them? Did you properly bed in the pads when you installed them ?
I have app. 16k miles on NAPA rotors and new HPS pads and after very hard usage I have no problems.
Most "warpage" is caused by build up from the pads.

I did clean the rotors well. My initial bed-in might not have been great because of the fact I didn't bleed the fluid properly (have since redone it) and had tons of mush in the pedal. Next time I get the chance, I will do another bed-in and see if that makes a difference. Another thing I thought strange last time I rotated the tires - the front left wheel didn't want to mate up properly with the disc hub before I torqued it down. I'm thinking that this might have something to do with it. When I have time, I'm going to take the wheel back off and see what's going on.

The wheel is hub centric and you have to make sure it is seated properly before you tighten the lug nuts. That would be something to check.
You don't have to bleed the brakes to bed in the pads.

I think you identified your problem.
