I'm getting pretty annoyed, so I hope one of you guys has a solution for me.
Yesterday I went out to my car and started it up and the gas gauge went all the way past F. I know I'm at about 1/2 tank right now, so I knew something was messed up. I gave a good whack on the side of the dash and the needle went back to where it should be and stayed there. So, later I went to drive again and the needle goes past the F again. So, I thought that the needle was hanging up on my gauge overlays. I figured that the 90* weather was making them warp slightly and making the needle hang up.
I pulled the dash apart and the overlays seemed fine. I gently moved the needle to the 1/4 tank mark and re-installed the cluster. Everything was good until this afternoon.... same problem. I decide to remove the overlays altogether to avoid any other problems. Start the car up and... same F---ing deal. Obviously the overlays were not the issue. I don't think it's the float in the gas tank because of the problem being temporarily fixed with a punch to the dash. Is my cluster crapping out? Could it be the tank float? Any other ideas??
