Took the car (which was new to me 12/2007--I've not yet driven it more than about 5 miles on the street) over to Black Tie Racing's shop in Waukesha, WI last week to have all of the bits that we have been collecting over the winter put on the car--along with some routine maintenance.

Tuesday (4/15) AM we get the call...problems with one ot the front struts (Custom valved Koni inserts) and the new Cusco camber plate. Long story short, the threads on the strut's top mount are stripped, and the Cusco nut is a little boogered up too.

We take the strut to Zion, Il to a shock specialist who does the Penske shocks for Black Tie's GT1 Corvette ...doesn't look good...no immediate solution...we'll see what he can do by the morning.

Wednesday AM...I call Shock guy...still nothing good...I call Lee Grimes at Koni and leave a message...I call Gordon at Koni, only to determine that it really needs to be rebuilt. Koni can do it in 6 weeks. EEEK! He suggests a call to TrueChoice in Ohio. I do. They can do a "rush"...maybe 10 days-2 weeks...for $250-300 estimated. Call back to Illinois (mid AM), to arrange shipping strut to Ohio. Ask him to run a tap thru the top nut...and mail it and the plate back.

Thinking the weekend is now shot. Pondering driving my stock 2007 Mazda6 on 225/45-17 SPTs in Street Tire class...wondering what else to do. I recall at this time that SR struts had 300# springs. My front coilovers are 440#. Meh! Close enough!!! I call Focaljet buddy Steve at Tousley Ford in "the Cities"...he doesnt have any...but gives me name of dealer in Bloomington, IL that shows a pair. I call there. They have a right side only. He finds a left for me in Wyoming, MI. Got wrong phone number--Century 21 office....grrrrrrr. I call Steve back. He checks...calls Michigan. They have it. Gives me correct phone number. I call...can it be overnighted? "don't think so... lemme check..." "yep...made it by 10 minutes (1.50pm EDT)!"
SOLD!

Call back Illinois dealer...makes the Brown Truck by an hour. Call back to shock guy..."dont mail the plate and nut!!! I'll be by in the AM..."

Lee Grimes calls me back. People, If you need shock help--this guy is THE resource. I explain the sitation from the top...and he concludes, 20 minutes later, that while not ideal, it'll likely work OK in a pinch. No I wonder...did the struts actually ship on time.

This morning...Brown truck arrives about 10.45. It has both boxes!!! I call and then run back down to Zion and get camber plate and nut. Kurt does not have the 12x1.25 tap in his set. OK...no biggie...I'll pick one up at the hardware store on my way to dropping off the SR struts and camber plate back at Black Tie Racing. End up driving right by the dealership that I used to work at for 11 years...think "hey...one of the techs will have a tap...it'll save me soom loot"

12x1.25 is not a common size, as it turns out. Mac, Matco and Snap-On dont include it in their sets. The last guy we asked...out of 11 or 12 techs had one in his 'junk drawer".

Run the stuff back to Dan at Black Tie...and hopefully it'll all go together tomorrow by lunchtime...and at least get as far as an alignment (no corner weights this time around) in the afternoon.

School/test-tune is Saturday and Event 1 is Sunday...I hope Friday is a good day!!!

good luck! i ended up breaking my brakes (no pun intended) at the school. i did good at event 1 in chicago, though. i placed 2nd of 16 in STS...lost to a subaru 2.5RS by 0.013 seconds and PAX'd in the top 1/3.

if you ever find yourself with the car broken down, gimme a holler and i'll let you co-drive my STS monster!

by the way...M12, M10 and M8 are the most common bolt sizes on our cars...and almost everything is 1.25 pitch. ACE hardware has always had replacement bolts and flange nuts that i need for the zx2...i snap a lot of bolts. Home Depot has a decent variety of grade 8.8 metric 1.25 bolts, too. Lowes doesn't, however.

The nut for the top of the strut comes with the camber plate kit...not an off-the-shelf-item. Has a flange that fits inside the pillowball...

Thanks for the offer!

Did the school today.

Did a number of test-n-tune runs before the students came to the lot.

The car is very fast...and boy does it rotate.

I am hearing a clicking/tapping noise in the left front...varies w/ wheel speed, and car need not be on (can happen when coasting or even if car is jacked up and turn over tire/wheel quickly by hand). Thinking diff or inner CV. When running, it can be slightly felt in the shifter as well...but mainly heard.

Thoughts?

Car drove fine except for this--it cannot be noticed at any appreciable speed.

i get it a bit, too...but i thought it was just a worn upper strut mount.

you came in 96th of 121...not bad at all for your first time...especially while experiencing severe car troubles.

The noise is tied to rotation on the drivers front wheel...and seems to be coming from the transaxle area...like I said CV (which looks fine...and the noise is no different if turning or straight)...or diff has an issue.

We opted to dive the car regardless...if it blows it'll get looked at next week, if it doesnt blow it'll still get looked at...

just wordering what it might be, as I have very little time in the ZX2

wow that sucks. I think I could've done so much better if I got to run my last race...

STS- how far do u live from the track?

STS-ZX2SR

East Troy is about 30 miles southwest of Milwaukee...

alright so about 15 minutes? Cuz if you lived farther away, I would recomment trailering like I did! lol well worth it.

It takes about 25 minutes...

we'll drive it over in the AM. I have AAA...

The car felt fine on the drive home this afternoon...just heard the noise when I was coming to a stop. I did not feel it in the shifter at speed, but could when slowing around 10mph or less...which is about when you could hear ittoo.

good to hear! i hear ya on the car tending to rotate...i can't keep the back behind me!
I also had this rotation issue and if you like the car that way that's great but I found that a much lower tire pressure in the back (I used as low as 30 psi on a really crappy surface, 32 psi on good blacktop and probably 33-34 psi on concrete) helped keep the rotation under control. This is with an SR damper/ Eibach spring setup w/ 22mm adjustable rear bar on lowest setting.
Since we have been running for a couple of months already down here in Florida I have been able to play with this and it works very well for me.

Wow, so much for that theory. You rear springs are probably much stiffer than mine though. By the way, Jegs called two days ago and cancelled my order for that camber kit. It has been discontinued.

440/370 for spring rates.

The Minnasotans come down to Milwaukee a lot for our events here; seems a certain yellow ZX2 is now on the radar screen...

On the rotation thing. You have to learn how to drive the car and make use of it. The main thing is to brake in a straight line. When You back off and the rear starts to come around, apply some throttle to control it.
It's odd but I don't have a problem with this. I run a 22mm rear bar also, tire pressures near equal, around 40psi with maybe a little more in the rear. Of course there have been times when the driver had a momentary loss of talent.
Maybe it is because I have been driving FWD cars for so many years that I am attuned to the idiosynrasys of the cars.

What springrates and tires do you use, Ice?

iceracer

I run the eibachs that came on the SR. I haven't gone any stiffer since it is also my daily driver. For track days I am running the Hoosier R6 in 205/50-15 on a 7" wheel.
If I were going to run more autox's I would run A6.
Of course, you are running STS so those are out. Bridgestone and the Azenis are the top dogs but there are others coming out.
