View Full Version : STI to S2000? Bad idea or worst idea?

Since this isn't a Subaru or Honda board (some of the bias is gone) tell me if this is a bad idea....
Ditching the STI for a AP1 S2000.
Pros:
RWD
Stock handling is exceptional
9k redline
I would save almost $300/month
Cons:
Torque
Torque
Torque
No driving in the snow
2 seats/less space
Tell me why this is a horrible idea...

It's more of a lifestyle choice than this car has these specs over the other one. If you want a 2 seater you can't drive in the snow than get it. I don't know you, so who am I to comment other than with what I just said.

Agreed, you wouldnt buy a two seater if you regularly need to carry more than 2 people. The S2000 has decent trunk space, but you still cant carry much, which in a sports car is perfectly acceptable. If you have to drive in the snow on a regular basis then the S2000 should totally be out of your mind as a DD.

To me, the S2000 just screams "retired semi-life crisis"
The majority of guys I see driving them are mid 60's balding men wearing some classy invisible bi-focals.
They are nice cars tho, but if it where up to me, I would stick with the STI

I have another car lined up for winter/backup DD so weather is not a problem.

Maybe where you live, but here its all young professionals who wanted a go fast Honda.
If you have a DD lined up and you dont need the extra cargo room of rear seats i would go with the S2000 for sure! I have driven both and you will get better mileage and much more fun with the s2000. I would also drop the money for the hardtop because its just pure sex!

I'd recommend going onto a S2000 forum to see if there are any common problems, cost of quality aftermarket parts etc. Obviously being a Honda it most likely has a huge aftermarket, but price is a big factor.
Cost of factory parts is another thing to look at.
Personally I wouldn't. They are nice, handle very well, but I just don't like it.

Saving almost 3600 a year is a strong reason to go with the S2000.. I am in no way a huge fan of the S2000 and if it were me I'd keep the STi... But that extra cash per year could help if you really need it...

I'm not a fan of a s2000 at all. Roadsters are meant to be for old guys with midlife crisis. I'm sure you'll miss your boost and sound of your boxter too much.

See i have to disagree with you here. Roadsters are a totally new driving experience that isnt for everyone, but it isnt just meant for the old balding fucks who are trying to get laid by young girls. As far as the s2000 goes, its a pure down to basics sports car that you can live with every day. They are comfortable, have great power, and weigh nothing so the lack of torque compared to the STI's motor is not as big of an issue as some may think. We arnt talking about a BMW Z3 here, we are talking about a true manly sports car that racers absolutely love! I do love the STI, but i know i couldnt live with driving one everyday with cost of parts and maintaining the thing and the seats being well, not the most comfortable.
To the OP, if you havent driven one, i highly suggest you do, actually i suggest you try to get multiple test drives to truly feel out the car. They are amazing feats of engineering, drive amazing, and if i could afford one right now i would have it in a heart beat over any other car in its price range.

You mean slow like the stock AP1 model year 2000 s2000 was? You mean to say 0-60 in 5.5 seconds is slow? I mean yes its a little slower than the STI, but thats because of the AWD grip off the line.

I've driven about 4 different S2K's...all from friends to test drives. It's a completely different car then the Subaru and I kinda like that. I'm just worried that the "new car awesomeness" will wear off on the Honda and I'll wish I had the Subaru again....THAT is my biggest problem.

I'm asking the same question on S2KI but I don't know if anyone on there went from STI -> S2K....I've seen quite a few reverse which scare me.

This is another reason. $300 a month is no joke nor is it chump change. Saving up to buy a place is serious business and every $100 I can save a month goes a long way.
I'm not going to downgrade to some shitty FWD DD just to save some bucks. If I going to save money I want a car I can enjoy.

well like its been posted before, its a whole new experience, and if you have doubts before, then you probably shouldnt do it, or research on the S2000 forums some more. Also you will hear this a lot on the s2k forums, but it was heavily under tuned from the factory, and with the small basic boltons and a good tune, you will be making a decent bit more power.

Make sure you see if your model was affected by a recall honda sent out. They were having an issue with either one of the cyl spark plugs backing out or an oil squirter clogging. ( I can't remember which ) but I have a few friends with s2ks who had engine problems because of that. Honda replaced them due to the recall but just something to watch out for.

I moved to a land of "no torque" (so they say). With a few mods slapped onto my Si I can honestly say this car has been almost as fun to drive as my 350Z. More fun than the GTI, ZX2, or tC.
The only downside of the S2k is that it doesn't respond to N/A mods for shit. I know a few guys with bolt on Si's that have made S2k guys cry.
BTW, 4k VTEC crossover fixes all the "no torque" issues people cry about with Hondas. And 8700 rpm shifts 4tmfw!
You will miss having boost... just something to keep in mind.

The S2K would NOT be modded. The car will stay the way I buy it EXCEPT for maintenance items and tires.
I don't need a car that is a stop light racer. I want something that handles awesome and is a blast to drive
Not to mention I'm sure the S2K embarrasses everyone of your bolt on SI's on the track :)

Doesn't sound like you'd be buying it to be a track car anyway, so that's a moot point. But the Si holds it's own through the curves.
Again, you'll miss the boost.

a s2000 dosnt really have many things you can mod for gains...the only thinkg you can do to really make it go any quicker than it is stock is to put a turbo on it and get a tune and blah blah blah so it is very expensive to mod.
there goes that 3600...
just food for thought.

giving up the backseats in the STi isn't even something to put as a pro or con...if you consider the leg room back there, you might as well have a 2 seater.
it's up to what you want out of the car.
STi = rally proven technology in the whole car
S2000 = Formula One technology in the suspension and chasis

Go for it! I know a guy with an STI who saw my car and was telling me he should have got a roadster. He said he liked his car but his dates think it's a 16 year olds car. It was kinda funny.
Could you at least get a hard top for the S2K? Hard tops = pure sex.

You know.. It used to almost be a selling point that your girlfriend or wife would hate the care you're gonna buy... Now guys are letting women dictate what cars they drive? Wow... Older STi's may look kind of ridiculous with the giant wing and hood scoop but you're in it for the AWD and boost, not to get approval from the female crowd...
And yes you can get a hardtop for the S2K... I'd love to have a black S2K with a hardtop...

Yes, I do autox during the summer here. I've ridden in a Honda quite a few times, different cars and drivers. It's a much different experience.

If you're quite competitive you may want to check what stock class is for each and see how well each particular vehicle is compared to others in its' class. I know if I were super competitive I wouldn't want my ZX2 (or any car really) to be in a class that is completely dominated by an 89 Civic/Mini/Impreza RS. It might be something to at least think about.

we have a guy in my local SCCA that drives in AS with his S2000 and is on his way to nationals this week...he typically runs on street tires, too. hands down, he's consistently far faster than the stock STi's, even on RE-11's instead of A6's.
