My 98 seems like it should have another gear. You hit 5th and judging by the sound it seems as if there should be a 6th gear. Anyone else experience this? maybe i have an exhaust leak.

3rd,4th, and 5th gears are shorter on the 98's. I believe those are the gear's haha.

i do wish we had 6 gears though. but ur right it is at a high rpm in 5 gear.

Most of the time, 6th gear in a 6 speed is close to 5th gear in a 5 speed. The gears are just closer together, so you really don't get any benefit. But yeah, running 70mph at 2k or so RPMs would be nice.

imo, i think you can. i wonder whats the 5th in the escape??? sedan is .717. somebody on the 5th gear swap thread said something about the metro 5th gear being a .69. dude, post that the escape 5th gear in the that thread.

i just read the whole post, looks pretty straght forward. about how long did it take you? also, i am assuming u need the drive gear from the same vehicle the 5th gear came out of. Any year/model escape work? 4cyl? thanks

the tallest gear that i know will work is the sedan 5th. but the escape and the festiva(^ there i said metro, my bad) could work.

trust me if you do the 4 door swap you'll notice a huge difference. it took me and davidawg 2 hours to completely dissasemble one transmission and then transfer it to another case. this should take you about 30 min with the transmission out. all you need is a impact wrench. all you have to do is pull that pan. and its right there

i just checked mine the other day, 70mph at 3200rpms with stock gears

^yeah I am about there too, lower R's would be nice.
