Our cars may be increasing in value.
I was talking to a dealer friend who had just come from the used car auction.
Small cars are going at a premium and suv's and trucks go begging.
A beat up Geo Metro went for more than a perfect Ford Explorer.

Buy low sell high.

Sounds about right. At salvage auctions the first gen Focus goes for more then the second gen. ZX2s still go for a fair price.

No question, I just bought a 2000 Focus Wagon for my wife, to replace her '88 GT Mustang, and I could have gotten a 2000 Expedition for the same price. Crazy! I would rather have the Expedition, but the gas will kill me. The Focus is great, I bought it just two days after he advertised it. People are buying economy cars like crazy and driving the price up, I paid about 500 more than I thought the car was worth, but it was all I could find and had to jump on a well taken car of car. 90,000 miles seems pretty low these days :)

The car is not really worth more. Supply and demand will just increase the market price, plus people will be willing to "get ripped off" by a raised price on a small car if it means they can save longterm on fuel.

Supply and demand logic says that it is worth more....to the market.

I think it was USA today that had an article on this topic the other day. Some guy paid $3000 for a mid 90's Metro.

The Metro was a '93 and went for $2100, the Explorer was a '99 and went for $1050

My friend just bought an '04 Superduty for $18k w/ 38k miles on it. Insanely cheap considering it was a 40k truck new.

Lady brought in an 04 traiblazer the other day for a trade in. Good shape, 88k miles on it. She still owed like 15k or something. We gave her 7,100 on a trade for it.

The next day, a 03 cavalier came in. Decent shape, low miles (somewhere in the 40k range). 9,300.

The market on smaller cars has definitely gone up. We are selling used smaller cars at a higher price, and we have some trucks marked down by thousands.

The metro's could easily get 40+ city and 50 mpg highway. So they ought to be going up in value for a good used one. I can see it now on craigslist, "'06 Navigator, loaded with flat screens and 22" wheels, will trade straight up for metro"

I intend to keep mine for a while.
Maybe I'll use iceracer's car for parts later on.

I had a 96 Metro that I bought new and I got a bug up my butt for a new car and I picked up an 07 Hyundai Accent and I sold my Metro that had 55,000 original miles to my oldest daughter for 1000 bucks. She just sold it a little over a year later to some guy for $4000. I was a little pissed at her, but it was hers after all. Car market has gone all goofy. I sold a Mach1 Mustang that I had two summers ago and I got a good price for it. Glad I don't own it now.

Was looking through craigslist , wow the prices for the zx2 are for sure going up, on any smaller decent gas mileage car. Lowest one I see in area is $2000 for a 1999, dealer in area
wants $3500 for a 98, and it doesn't even look that sharp.

I just read that one or two year old small cars are bringing near new car prices and there is a shortage of many new models due to the demand.
Now if you are in the market for a truck or suv, the dealer will love you.
