Are transmissions do not take gear oil.

Use the Automatic Transmission Fluid for the MTX.

I use Mobil one and It seems good.

Remember drain from the bottom bolt drain bolt and fill thru or VSS(vehicle Speed Sensor) hole.

I just use Mobil 1 ATF.

I always fill through the side hole.. I think the bolt is the same size as the bottom drain hole..

I'm replacing my tranny today. I think I'm going to go with redline but I'm putting some cheap stuff in there just to get me by for a week or so until I figure out what is best for our trannys.

I have not changed the fluid in my car yet--the previous owner said that it's Royal Purple.

However, in the past, including my Ford Focus, I've used Redline MTL. From their website:

Red Line Oil's MTL and MT-90 are designed to provide excellent protection and improved shiftability for manual transmissions and transaxles, having cured the problem of hard shifting in thousands of transmissions with shifting troubles. How? They have the appropriate coefficient of friction for most manual transmission synchronizers (many gear oils, engine oils, and ATFs are too slippery for proper synchro engagement). And, the wide viscosity of MTL and MT-90 allow proper shifting over the entire temperature range which the transmission will experience. The synthetic base oils used have a very high viscosity index which provides relatively constant viscosity as temperature changes. MTL is a low 70W at very low temperatures and a high 80W, nearly an 85W, at elevated temperatures, providing adequate viscosity to prevent wear and deaden gear noise. MT-90 is a thicker 75W90 version of MTL. The shear stability and oxidation stability of these products are excellent, thus the physical characteristics of Red Line MTL and MT-90 will change little with use.

Our transmission DO take gear oil. It is an option in the service CD manual.
ATF is the lowest that will work. It is OK for light duty if you change it a lot.
Use GM or Pennzoil Synchromesh, Redline MTL, MTL/MT90 mix, or Amsoil's new MTF.
They are fiction modified for good shifting [unlike ATF]. They have MUCH better wear characteristics than ATF.

Is that the same for the G5M transmission?

The redline mix, is that a 50/50 mix or what?

Don't we only need 3 quarts? so would we have to buy 4, 2 of each? Sorry for the newb question but I'm allowed, I'm still at newb status. :D

... we need like 3.68 if i remember correctly... but it's ok if u overfill it because it will come out but dont go crazy with it and dont freak if u see a lil tranny oil in the drive way.

O lol, I might have to grab another quart then to hold me over until I get the redline. I got a junkyard tranny and I want to run cheap shit threw it for a week or however long it takes me to get redline. Only have 3 quarts and the tranny is going in tomorrow.

We take between 3 and 3.5 [approx] to refill. Who knows why? I use the fill bolt to get the level right. On flat ground, fill until it runs out.
Buy 4 and be safe.
The Redline mix is great.
Amsoil is superb by all accounts.
The GM or Pen Synch is always a winner.

I am running Pennzoil Synchromesh. just over $6 a quart at Auto Zone. That is if you can find one that actually has 4 quarts on hand. Nothing local to me had more then two. Good luck.

I just got back from a spin in my Z. The shifts are so smooth you can just feel the gears slip into place. I have never felt my tranny shift so smooth. I'm using the redline mix and I recommend it to everyone. I have ran royal purple and the redline mix feels superior so far. Royal Purple was great but it only lasted so long. I ordered it from titanmotorsports.com.

Snow - I'm glad the mix worked for you. I used MTL by itself - it was good. But like people on different forums suggested, I tried the mix.
Nice, isn't it?

yea i tried the mix as well and it really does shift smooth... unfortunat;ey the tranny is leaking again do i got a good 10 miles out of the new mix...

Oh, sorry about that, thanks for the quote. It must have slipped me by when reading through the threads.

OK, so from that quote I understand: you used to use straight RoyPur in the past but the mix 1:1 of Roy & Red do the best job in super smooth shits, right?

Also, please specify that if it is Royal ATF to Redline MT-90?
Thx.

O god no lol, use 50/50 mix of redline MTL and Redline MT-90. Buy 2 of each. I bought from titanmotorsports.com. Very good deal IMO.

Royal Purple FTL. I still have to get the shit out of my motor. lol

I tempted to deviate from the formula since there is a local 20% off sale on Amzoil products! But it's just a temptation that I can get over because I want to achieve that smooth notchless shifting.

mechtech
04-28-2008, 01:14 AM
The new Amsoil manual trans lubes are excellent.
The shifting and protection will be great.
Give any new trans fluid several hundred miles to impregnate the pores of the metal before passing judgment.

Royal Purple testing is why I am not a fan. Bobistheoilguy.com has had input for a long time. The gear oil was the worst in objective testing, especially corrosion.

well my car/tranny is up and running again... and i have used royal purple and compared it to the redline mix and redline is like butter. I noticed a difference in the oils just when i put it in...Royal purple seemed verythin compared to the redline. so far so good...
but i will get back in this thread in a few 100 miles and let u know if anything has changed or not.

I caught myself too late after the post I realized I misspelled Amsoil with a Z. Content is what matters, not petty grammar.

Moving on....

So from what I understand, "like butter" you're writing in the positive connotation.

Yes, please get back to us with details... say at the time of your next fill-up (after this one), actually pay real close attention and study and changes you notice and let us know.

All, the links previously mentioned (I believe 2 or so) are a great place to purchase the Redline MTL and MT-90 for our mix. I encourage you to post additional links, especially if the site discounts shipping for additional bottles.

I'm back, it's been too long. Well it's true, the Redline Mix is very superior and improves slickness in shifting! I'm very happy with the results! I bought 2 bottles of each (MTL and MT-90) from my local performance retailer. I called Action Auto Parts to specifically ask if they had enough of both in stock, since it was quite the drive.

It's silky shifting continues to impress me daily. I recommend this mix to those that haven't done it yet. Save yourself the agony and don't deviate from the formula. Enjoy.

As a reminder for people.

Zx2 requires thinner transmission fluid.

If you use redline make sure you use the redline MTL fluid. Do not use MTL 90. It is not the correct fluid for our transmission.

Syncromesh from penzoil is highly reccomended along with the same from amsoil.

ZX2s also were also spec'd for regular heavy gear oil - it depends on when and where you looked. The latest CAFE is for ATF, of course.
Remember that a 75-90 weight gear oil is similar to a 10-40 motor oil, because they are rated at different temperatures. Not so thick now, is it?
MT90 can work great, but in winter it may be a bit stiff until things warm up.
I use MTL and MT 90 at 50/50 -it is the best I've used so far.
I may go to MT 90 straight, though.

For the same money, you could have had a dedicated manual trans gear oil that is friction modified for synchronizers, and much better anti wear properties [than ATF].

i use mobil 1 as well. waaaayy better than whatever was in there before

mechtech
07-24-2008, 12:24 PM
What was in there before was dino Mercon ATF, which after about 5,000 miles had sheared down to a 2 weight, and was additive depleted.
Bacon grease would have felt better.
We have to look at the paper specs.

Royal Purple Syncromesh is a must! Same with Royal Purple Racing 41 (0w-10) Thinner is so much better for the drive train and engine, sooooo much less friction and stickyness causing build up, jamming. Pennzoil Syncromesh is a regret for me. Just my thoughts though. i blew my second trans 2yrs ago and been sittin since. Tranny was gonna go but was able to use the RP for nearly 2 months and made a huge difference. Now me S/R sits in the garage....Long story to why its been sitting for so long but ive disassembled both trannys and hopefully come up with ideas

mechtech

Boost - There is NOT "soooooo much less friction and stickyness" [whatever that means] with 'thinner' trans oil.
You or anybody else was NOT getting 'build up'.

Penn Synch is one of the better fluids - it's design and add packs are great - it is a partial synthetic.
Synchromesh fluids are similar viscosity - they have to be to fit the designation. So RP and Penn Synch are the same in that respect.
I would never use RP in a trans [for a first or second choice] after reading about it and checking the used oil analysis' of it.
