View Full Version : Question about black history

Ok before I decide to respect my quite often less than intelligent mother even less I decided to ask just to be positive I'm not crazy.

This isn't a joke its a serious question so don't get maddd

I was talking to my mom and somehow fried chicken gets brought up and she says its a historical part of black people's culture and thats why its placed in areas with a large black population.

Now here's my question. Does it really have anything to do with their culture or is it just because it is cheap and black people are quite living in poor areas?

I'd like to think that my mom had some kind of reasoning behind this so fill me in.

its soul food. part of their culture. archeologists have unearthed church's and popeyes in africa dating back to 300 B.C.E.

I got bored and googled it and this is what I came up with.. Not sure how true it is but I know the part about slaves only being given chicken is true to some extent so i would say that your mom is correct in a sense........

"Fried chicken is a part of black culture. It was created in the South, and black Americans once mostly lived in the South. Naturally, fried chicken would remain popular with black people. In addition, black people helped develop its seasoning, and ate it especially often because slaves were only allowed to keep chickens.

Its popularity lives on. Fried chicken is much more likely to be served at a black event than a white one outside of the South, and thank God for that. People offended to read that chicken has something to do with black culture are claiming that soul food is not black food."

I kinda grew up in the south being in st. pete, fl. However, the south is actually located a few hundred miles north of me. I'm not black for what that matters, just speaking on my semi-southerness.

Growing up we drank koolaid because water was free from the tap, sugar is a couple bucks for a big bag, packets of koolaid were like $.05, and we drank the stuff like water from playing outside all day.

I love fried chicken and have been eating it my whole life and will continue to do so. Even bad fried chicken is good. Its also very cheap. $10 will feed a family of like 32. It is at almost every event where there is food and people down here.

Watermelon, not so big on, but i'll eat it if its there. Also $3 and will feed an army from 1 melon.

Sounds like its all about cheap and easy huh? I know the cost of living is lower in the south and so is the pay. *shrug*

QFT. And I wouldn't have it any other way. Sweet Tea is pretty cheap too. I honestly eat fried chicken multiple times a week it never gets old.

And for the record, I do live in the south and am white.

This might be a little off topic, but doesn't having a "Black history month" seem like self segregation? Just a thought I had. I have nothing against black people and have a few black friends but will never understand why it's so important to treat them like a different species. What do you think

capitalcrew

I agree completely to be honest with you. I feel like the minorities are more racist than white people..

There was a girl I liked who was Hispanic, and her parents won't let her hang out with me. They won't even talk to me. I know she is really proud of her heritage n such, I am assuming it is because I am white. :/

Even so, with that aside.. having a special month dedicated to segregation? Nice..

You know it is easier for a black woman to get into the NYSP than it is for a white man..? All PR shit, but, wtf is that?

wifeszx2
05-19-2008, 12:03 AM
Same reason we have Native American appreciation, Hispanic heritage, etc. We (white people) took the land from it's indigenous habitants and claimed it as our own, and we took black people from their homeland and enslaved them here. If we didn't have these salute to minorities we would be considerred the white devil . . . wait, we still are, nevermind. Same reason we have BET, but no white entertainment television and all black schools but not all white schools. Pretty messed up if you ask me, minorities (to include women) want to be treated as equals but expect special treatment, kind of like the physically hadicapped.

wrong, its not speacial treatment that is wanted.
black history month is a reminder what happened and why it happened, and to recongnise black peoples that contributed to what the united states is today in the face of the way the country treated them.
it took balls, huge balls. all about fair treatment, nothing more.
and any self respecting black man, or women, would not want, nor accept speacial treatment because of what they are. or for what other blacks have accomplished.

Man I am all for equal rights and enjoy Black History month, I really like learing as much about different races as possible. I enjoy soul food, hip-hop, black women etc. I believe that the hate against white people needs to stop though. If you truely want to be equals, quit dwelling on the past. Stop with the special needs, bitching and expecting shit for free. No one likes a whiner, people like winners. I have Irish in my blood and Native American too. You don't see me begging for reperations, demading free land or taking advantage of scholarships. I am not my great grandfathers, I didn't go through what they went through, so I am not entitled to free shit for their suffering. I am my own man and will live my life how I see fit. No one has to give me anything, I will earn what ever I get, and make my own future.

Then explain affirmative action then? Your telling me "white men" were the ones who threw this plan on the table? Your telling me that a less qualified individual for the job automatically gets it just because they happen to be a minority so riots don't break out is fair? Why do some schools make a foriegn language a requirement to graduate? This is our country, learn our language. Why do we have to cater to the outsiders, you came here. Quit taking advantage of the system. Some people want to live here and reap the benefits, but still claim allegiance to their home country. Get the "F" out of my house and quit screwing up our economy.

This thread can and probably will quickly get out of hand and stray from "Black History month" quick. I think everyone is racist, some times it can be good though, there is nothing wrong with having pride in your race. I don't think it is a sin to want to marry your own race and not want to marry outside your race. As long as your not doing physical harm to someone just because of their race, denying a qualified person a job because of their race, etc it's all good. What pisses me off is that it is OK or acceptable for minorities to be outspokenly racist.

Anyways, I'm all for black history, just stop with all the black/white and man/woman bullshit. Earn what you get, stop taking and expecting, then you will truely be respected and equal.

Then explain affirmative action then?

once upon a time, blacks, or any minority had no place in managment positions, or high paying jobs not because they where unquilified. but because of what they were. even to this day, alot of jobs promote or hire because of a underground system called the "good ol boy club" congress saw that blacks (although free) would never get a chance to advance. most of all buisness will be kept White owned. Although the system, and equal right looked good on paper, eveyone knew it didnt work, cause of, once again. "the good ol boy club" the answer was affermitive action. where work places could not be completely white. and by mandating that at least one black must work in all buisnesses. there for blacks working along side whites and not being held down , (under the table)
i admit,, in my opinion, it was abuse in some instances .
it was met to end segragation, and mingle everyone together so blacks can have a fair run at the american dream. cause back then ,, we didnt.

it worked, and after awhile, it ended, affermitave action is no longer needed.
hope i answered your question, however i realize im not the most articulate person when it comes to explaining things. so before you bash it, research it on the net. study up

I want to be judged by who I am.. not who my ancestors are. I want that guy to get that job instead of me because he's better at it, not because he is black, or something else. That isn't how it is though, and that isn't right.

Affirmative action is bullshit, and it is keeping qualified people out of positions due to public relations ad hiring quotas.. My cousin just got a 97 on his NYS trooper entrance exams.. he won't get in, until a certain number of minorities are hired, even if their grades are lower than his.

Fuck affirmative action.

I'm not saying you, all black people, hispanics, asians, women are POS. Just like not all white men/people are POS. There are always the few that ruin it for the majority. I love witnessing the guy or gal who makes it, overcomes the odds. I look up to my father and mother in law, who are black, I hope to be as succesful as them some day. It just pisses me off that there are minorities out there that give them a bad name, and there are white people out there that give me a bad name.

I WILL be hated though. People will blow it out of proportion and use hate to take down what I am fighting for. Those who benefit from it will fight against it, whether it be right or wrong. You may support it, few others will. It would also attract the wrong kind of attention, I would have hate groups supporting me which is not something I would hope for.

I am also 18, and have no political power what so ever, I also have no idea how to get it, and have no desire to do so.

I am against not saying the pledge of allegiance in schools. You can skip the under God part if you wish, but pledging allegiance to your country should be no hard feat, especially when you live in it and reap the benefits every day. Stop taking your lives for granted people. This country is dedicated to you.. dedicate yourself to it.

A pastor has a voice, and he is heard by many. I am 18 years old and am going to a community college for computer networking or machining. I have no voice. I have no power. I command no respect. I have only one thing, my opinion, and there is nothing I can do with it. I have no money, I have no following, I have no respect.

Gunslinger

wrong, wrong wrong. your young and thats why you think that way. you gotta change the way you think. you got more voice and power than you think, and poteintial unrealized. You should expect psychological resistance, then when you do, crush it with articulation, grace, and intellegence. a easy way to voice your opinion is to vote. vote, vote, dont matter for who, just as long as the person you vote for favors more about how you feel. write you congressman, mayor,. your in college right? man, if i had my brain and your youth, in your spot, i could raise all types of hell. stop being so negative, your stars,, are YOUR stars .. know what i mean ?

and btw, the majority of african slaves were not treated cruelly at all. they were just enslaved and didnt like. there were slaves throughout the history of the world i dont see what the big deal is.

and there were a ton of irish indentured servants as well as actual slaves. for a while irish were captued and bred with blacks on some carribean islands in an attempt to make a "better slave". we were also persecuted for years. not allowed to work at or even enter some establishments.

the difference is irish made intelligent decisions joining different organizations and finder jobs such as being police officers in many cities and climbing the political ladder.

if anyone was gonna argue with that, blacks were able to become police. around the turn of the century new orleans had more black cops than whites. then they got offended by something and left there jobs so as not to be associated with the government. good career move? i think not.
