my old HP died (I know what messed, and I can fix it, but the thing is 7 years old and just not worth the money to me), so I'm looking at laptops...
Anyway, In my searches, I keep coming across a spec by the name of "DDR". I think it's RAM (tell me if i'm wrong), Since I never see RAM and DDR on the spec page of the same laptop.
Do they go by the same measurement? does 1 gig of RAM = 1 gig of DDR?
Sorry, I feel like such a n00b...

DDR is the type of ram it has. Make sure your new purchase has atleast 2 gigs of memory. windows vista takes 1 gig of memory itself.

ddr = double data rate.

^^ Yup.
Like, 2.0 zetec is different from a honda 2.0 with vtec. Both engines though.
DDR and DDR2 are both RAM, just different RAM.

And if you find a machine running anything without DDR or higher, ignore it.. Not even worth your time. No newer PCs will have anything lower. =P

No, the answers about it being a type of RAM were correct (also). ;)

alright, I was debating between 2 laptops. A Compaq and a Sony. They are almost identicle except the compaq is $20 cheaper, has 2 gigs (as opposed to the viao's 1 gig) of DDR and 4 more USB ports.
I think i'm gonna go with the compaq.

BTW: if anyone cares, I got the compaq. It's really nice...
Only problem was that it came with Vista...>_<
