View Full Version : Painting the Interior

Just a quick question for those who have..

What grit of sandpaper did you use to remove the texture from some of the interior pieces?

Did you primer the pieces before applying the actual colored paint?

What paint did you find worked the best? (So far I've only come across Krylon)

Thanks in advance!

I used the same grits that come in headlight re-conditioning kits. Any paint will work with adhesion promoter, just find the paint that suits your taste the best, take your time and do several light layers, rather than few heavy layers. I'v actually been really thinking about trying the blitz black on an interior, but haven't found one I want to molest yet...

I agree with you, my punctuation-challenged brother. Yet with a painted interior, there's a chance he's going to get flamed either way.

Dude take it from me! Its not worth it! Almost every person that has, regretted it a few years later. I hate to spoil your dreams.

You'll realize how gay it looks a couple years later.
And it'll KILL the value of the car!

My god, it's bright! lol.

I'm thinking about painting... but unlike most people, I only want to go with a single tone. That's right, I'm too much of a broke ass to afford a dark charcoal interior swap, so why not paint it?

I'm looking at a flat black so it's not like "omg shiny", but wondering if ya'll would still say not to do it, even though it's a single color. I'm good at prep work and my girl is in college for paint and design, so she's VERY handy with a can of spray paint. She's painted stuff like our bumper and you can't tell it's spray painted... no lines, buildup spots, nothing.

And then of course a black fabric dye for the roof, carpets, seats, etc... maybe even just re-upholster the seats to leather with Red "ZX2" stitching.

It'll really look that bad....even with it only being a solid black? And it's not just saving... its finding... all the wrecked Zx'2 around here are grey or tan..

i sprayed my center console and the plastic door trim pieces where the door handles are located red. i honestly think that it doesnt look that bad if its done right, although its harder to maintain a more 'clean' appearance if you were to not regularly keep it whipped down with armor all or something like that. also i should mention that i did my center console about a year ago and there are a few paint chips on it just from normal use, which in my opinion makes it look kind of cheap. so in other words try not to go too overboard if you do spray your interior, and just think about what it may look like a year + from now to give you a better idea as to what pieces you choose to do. also make sure that the interior pieces are cleaned up and let them air dry to prevent any fabric from getting on them when going to paint, do thin layers, and take your time, and you should be set.

OK..Another question just popped into my head..

What do you clean your interior with. If it's painted? Is there products that should be avoided like Armor-All ?

the type of paint will determine what you use to clean. And, yes, you don't want to use armor all on it after you paint it

i've used armor-all before and never had any probs, if you were really worried about it a mild dish soap and water probably wouldnt hurt.

not really, posts like the following are annoying. My response is just because I don't want to argue with someone's automotive upkeep. If it works for them, just let them keep doing it  Maybe they know something that I don't.

I mention this because I have read the labels and have seen the effects of what has happened to parts on some of the cars I bought used when armor all was used and shouldn't have been :( How many people have spotted lenses on their gauge clusters because of this

Directions: 1. Shake well. 2. Apply liberally to a clean cloth and spread evenly, or spray onto surface. 3. Wipe off excess. 4. Apply as needed to maintain surface appearance and protection. ATTENTION: use only as directed. Not for use on floors, vehicle controls )pedals, grips, steering wheels), bench or cycle seats, cycle tires, brake drums and other surfaces where slipperiness may be hazardous. Do not use on or near clear plastic surfaces, glass (may cause smearing), fabric, woven materials or paint.

i never actaully saw your post bc i failed to hit the refresh button before posting, although i have used it a few times on the couple interior pieces that i did paint i havent seemed to notice any negative side affects:shrug:. so with that said that i now know its not supposed to be used on a painted surface (since i failed to read the label on the bottle) i stand corrected

Stupifyingly impressive or impressively stupid? That's a lot of money for interior cosmetics in an Escort, but end-result pictures might shut me up.

(you should post end-result pictures).

The verdict: stupifyingly impressive, and that's an understatement. It's not my style, but no one can deny the talent and labor put into that. Wow.

Back on topic - my buddy curses Armorall interior wipes. He says they dry out the dash plastics (but I still use them).

Armor all is overrated IMHO

Try crystal glo if you can get your hands on it, gives a deep wet look that actually soaks into the surface and protects agains UV, and doesn't attract assloads of hair in the process

Why is that?

most people never finish their interior or don't know what they should do next. It makes for an awful looking interior while it is in progress and it is prone to scratching. Here is an example of one that was done like that

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72v2e0w3RXw&feature=related

also, if you dye your seats to match expect it to rub off on your clothes for a while and expect it to fade.

there are very few people that have completely painted their interiors and had them come out good. The only interior I would consider this with is the light gray used in 98 and 99 (the 99 looks worse than the 98 :judge: ). All the other color, including blue, don't look bad when kept clean.

one more thing, if you paint parts black on the light gray interior it makes the car interior look dirty and mismatched if you use gloss

these are part of my reasons for not painting

Man i already have ALL the interior ripped out.. This winter I'm paint the interior and in the spring I will be redoing the car's paint job as it is scratched and fucked from the previous owner..

As soon as I start I'll post some pics up.. right now I'm trying to fit my 6.5" Speakers into my doors

I used car paint w/o priming or anything and it turned out good imo. Spray paint does look terrible. We got a parts car with spray painted interior and it looks very tacky. But do what u want man. If you do certain accents on the car like the instrument cluster and door handles etc and you paint them a clean color that would go good with the interior then it looks okay. Try to make it look like factory interior designing

I have changed the color of my interior tastefully by using VHT satin black vinyl dye. If you clean the surface with soap you can not get a bad result. The material will only soak up the amount of dye it needs and the rest if any will remain wet and wipe right off. Looks wicked ad as good as oem and never will chip. Can be used on any piece of trim plastic or rubber and vinyl to great results

I havent painted my zx2's interior, but I did on my Fiero.
I actually didn't sand it (I liked the texture).
I didn't need a primer because the interior was tan...but if your interior is black and you wanna go lighter I would highly suggest a primer coat.
I don't remember what brand it was (gosh this was 6 years ago...Im getting old) but I got it at autozone, and it was their cheap stuff....worked pretty well Id say.

- Clean the parts with warm soapy water
- Use a red scotch brite pad and scuff the piss out of them
- Clean again with warm soapy water
- Use bulldog (http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/klean-strip-bulldog-adhesion-promoter-p-12810.aspx) and follow the directions. Can get it in aerosol cans
- Apply generous coats of high build primer. They make it in cans but it's a lil pricey. I use stuff you spray out of a gun, it's a lot thicker. Looking at about 4coats of good auto grade primer or about 6-7 coats of aerosol can primer.
- After the primer dries, use some 320grit and start sanding. Go until the whole peice is smooth or you hit plastic again.
- If you hit plastic again re prime, let dry and sand again.
- After you get it smooth in primer with 320, can finish with 400 if using auto paint system or 600 if your using rattle can.

okay 2 things i must say

1. when you clean your interior DO NOT!!! use armor-all its horrid for you dash and everything else, it drys out everything and makes it crack. If you can, look around for Turtle Wax 2001 car polish (dont use it on anything you want to hold on to =p)

2. as everyone else said don't spray paint it, it looks tacky as hell. i just tore apart a 03 with yellow spray painted interior and not like the one above but everything! was yellow......

but if you do it right and it looks nice then Gj and GL if you have yet to do it
