View Full Version : Solid Motor Mounts?

So a friend of mine said he was planning on making solid motor mounts for his civic by taking it out and filling the holes with window caulking. He says its a popular mod on the civic forums. Is this plausible? And would it work for our cars? Also havent checked, they make ES bushing motor mounts for our cars too right? Would a solid mount be stiffer/better for our cars? Any How-To's?

If you don't mind all the vibration you will get.

window caulking = not solid enough IMO. I think the urethane inserts would be more solid

Agreed, window caulk is soft stuff.

Epoxy for the win. If you wanna do more than the inserts do[which do alot, its easy to tell the diff after driving for years with stockers] you can mix up a mean batch of epoxy and scoop it into the holes in the stock mount then slap the ES inserts in and put a clamp on it overnight.

Window caulking is TOTAL ricer BS.... Man them guys are stupid.... If you want soild take them out and weld them!!! welds = solid. window caulking= dumb ricer

3m window weld is urethane. It's actually pretty strong. Regular caulking is not.

Yeah, that's very "ghetto".
But then again, many Civic guys also do things like cut "speed holes" in their rear bumper, use stick-on hoodscoops and hood pins, cut springs, install washers for a tinted hood, do the single-wiper mod, install coffee can-like mufflers, use the car's weight in bondo and have big wings on a FWD car.
Sure, they're not ALL morons and ricers, but most of them we see are.

I bet the caulking your friend is referring to windshield urethane. Its a tube of liquid polyurethane that sets into the same material that the ES lower transmission inserts are made of.
I have filled my upper transmission and engine mount with that stuff and it provides a much tighter fit (and stiffer mount) than the ES bushings. There is no other option for the upper trans and engine mount if you want to go stiffer.
I have also tried a solid engine mount but i had to remove it due to very harsh vibrations. Since then, i have drilled through my urethane mounts and but bolts through them to up the rigidity a little more. Also, i have installed engine torque dampers on both the passenger and drivers side of the engine. There isn't much movement now under my hood but the vibrations are much higher than stock.
To make a solid mount you would first have to fab up a couple of end-caps to weld to. Welding alone would not work. Solid mounts result in extreme vibrations transferred to the car. Remember, we have a little 4-cyl, not a smooth revving V12.
PM me if you would like any specific details about how to do any of the above.

i used the 3m window weld that is made of urethane. it works good. i dont know what everybody else is talking about. they must be talking about some other different cheap product that is caulking.

the windshield urethane isn't a true urethane, but it's almost as good. A true urethane is almost always a two part mixture, vaguely like jb weld.

The Window urethane Adhesive that we use at Ford is called "Betaseal" from Dow.
It contains MDI based Polymer, Diisonoyl phtalate, Carbon Black (nasty stuff there), Poly (hexamethylenediisocyanate), and some other stuff.
It's plenty strong and stands up very well.... Far better than simple inserts!!
Oh, and it is a Urethane.... it's in a special tube that is air tight until it's used.... kinda like a new style soup can that you have a pop off tab top.

that's why I said almost always. and btw. wouldn't that be a polyurethane that you are talking about??

The reason I did it is to eliminate wheel hop.... I did all 4 mounts

It's actually listed as a urethane in the msds

Sadly he also did the wind shield single wiper mod too. lol Thanks for the link tre2000 that was pretty helpful. Basically Im torn. I want more performance from my ATX which means getting as much power to the ground as i can. I want the benefit of more performance with less chance of screwing something up, plus it has to last. When I do something like this I probably wont look at it again any time soon. Vibrations arent a problem for me as this thing already shakes and shimys in the weirdest places already lol. So basically what would you guys recommend? Custom solid mounts or ES? This threads pretty helpful keep it coming.

window != windshield. window caulking IMO is stuff for houses lol...
Sir William

TTFOWIA, this is urethane for your windshield... it's the stuff they use to bond the window to the metal..... hardly used for houses.

99 : I suggest filling the mount with some window weld made by 3M. Then sticking the ES insert's in and clamping it over night. Thatll give you a nice "solid" mount.

I used a silicone caulk/sealant it is for my dirt track car so ghetto is good. I have an insert in the front tranny mount and it isn't as solid as teh rear mount full of silicone. Pretty close though. You can use any sealant that dries solid. If you do this you can see a gain from the stiffness, and not have the complete harshness of true solid mounts, the only mounts I have are the rear soldi and the front tranny mount insert, the engien doesnt like to move with just those, also install a bobble strut.

thats what I said... window DOES NOT equal to windshield. when he said window, I tought about the house caulking lol

Ive researched more and found that in general ppl are using 3M window caulking but some are using industrial grade stuff. Im leaning more towards the ES inserts as I usually dont have the time to let the material cure. solid mounts wouldnt make too much more of a difference in comparison to ES inserts right? Next I guess what I should be asking is, where is the best place to get these bushings?

If you make the mount more rigid of course it's gonna make a difference. I just have my insert's in and it's a nice difference. Vibrates some more, but powder's pulley seemed to tame it a little. It's not as bone jarring haha. Just get the inserts. I bit the bullet and got them from zxtuner.

Check your PM's man I am interested in the solid mount you had.
