My parents had one when i was 13, but mom got it in the divorce and promptly sold it in favor of something she could afford.
I recall it being a very nice car, from a passenger's perspective. I remember my dad taking the car on the interestate and racing any punk teenager he could find.
Anyway, It was only a 4 banger with a turbo, but it went like stink... I was thinking about that car today and was just wondering if anyone here had any 1st hand opinions of it.
the kkk turbos are ok at low boost. its a very very small turbo, but with a SAFC, exhaust and boost controller at about 12lbs they arent bad cars

kkk turbos are most popular with porsches, if i'm not mistaken. so i guess they can't be that bad.

Considering they are the same company they use the same turbos. My aunt used to have that car. It weighs over 3000lbs and the turbo just helps keep it from being utterly slow. The car had a nice ride and decent pick up, it's rated the same in the quarter mile as a zx2.
I wouldn't get it because it has bad gas mileage and they are expensive to work on.

i thought the kkk turbos were from the south, and the nazi turbos were popular on german cars. hmmm.

vw recently bought porsche in the past decade. porsche has been using them for years. vw's are tunable monsters. do a little, get a lot. they are expensive though especially if it's an older car and more parts need to be shipped over, yada yada.

I'm guessing its a 1.8T. Stock they aren't very quick. However if your dad did any old school turbo tricks, I could see it being quick.

My vw has a tiny K03 turbo... and it makes obscene amounts of power for such a tiny turbo. It's all in the tuning. 10.5:1 c/r + FSI 4TW!

Porsche bought 54% of VW, not the other way around. VW, Audi, SEAT, and Skoda have been using the 1.8 Turbo for years. It has pretty much been replaced by the new 2.0 FSI Turbo (direct injection and 10.5:1 compression in a turbo). This engine is superb at developing great torque at lower rpms with good economy. Simply adding a chip will increase power like crazy.
We have a 2004 Passat 1.8T 5 speed. It is a little crazier than the 2.0 FSI. The power is normal (about like a Camry) and then at about 3200 rpm it takes off like a rocket. It is every bit as luxurious as an Audi (built on the same line as the A4). The engine is a little odd in that it is mounted longitudinally (as many of the cars are 4WD). This gives lots of room for the sides, but a timing belt change would be easier if the front end is removed (!). (But then again, the ZX2 isn't blessed with much room, either.) This car is German made, so parts are expensive right now. They are easy to find since lots of on-line stores exist, and local stores and dealers stock any maintenance items. (Dealers give discounts to on-line forum members!)
If you liked the power and want a VW car with almost unlimited tuning options, consider a Golf with a 1.8T (1999-2005). DO NOT get an automatic, and be prepared to fix power windows on earlier model year cars. The stock Golfs I have driven with a 1.8 T are a little too heavy on torque steer for me, but fun. Parts are common and since it is Mexican made, fairly cheap.
Another option is like my TDI Jetta. It has a little 1.9 diesel turbo, but with a switchable stage 2/3 chip and larger injectors, it is surprising. For less than $6,000 I have a reliable car with 220 lb ft of torque getting 50 mpg.
