View Full Version : One of Those Days...

Today has just been one of those days for me. I woke up this morning to a frayed clutch cable. It was still connected by about 50%, so I made the decision to ride the ~30mi to the nearest bmw shop and pick up a replacement. $23 isnt bad for a new cable, IMHO. I rode back to work and attempted to install said cable. It took about an hour to get the old one out because it was installed backwards (is that bad?). The stupid rubber bumper had sealed the damn cable in the lever, and took forever to get out! (I was about 30 seconds from borrowing a car and driving back home to grab a spare clutch lever). That was the good part of my day.

At lunch I somehow lose my only bike key. I dont know how, but somehow it was gone. Well, I guess I do know how.. I was distracted by the 25 minutes of being bitched at by my wife. But I digress.. We spent 30 minutes searching the parking lot, planters, restaurant, trash cans, and counter tops. Great, since I never bothered to get a spare made after I bought the bike, and somehow remembered to lock my forks..

I dropped my wife off at work, and drove back to the BMW shop, hoping they could look up they key number with my VIN, and cut a key. Silly me.. Did you know there is only one guy that makes every BMW key? He lives in a locked room in Germany, and takes 7 days to fill your order. Great, now my bike is stranded for a whole week and I get to pay $35 for a new key.

I was in the back talking with the service guys, when Pete (owner) came up and asked what was going on. After explaining everything (and the required 5 minutes of being made fun of), he told 3 service guys to take me, pile in the van, and go bring my bike back for a week until I get my keys. I was totally blown away that he was willing to give up half of his guys (and his van) to come help me out for 45 minutes in the middle of the day. Granted, my bike was only a mile away, but that is still awesome! I cant say enough good things about this shop.

Now I just have to carpool with the wife for a week until my key comes in. http://f650.com/phpBB2/images/smiles/icon_cry.gif

Funny about the BMW key ordeal taking 7 days.

Thats how it is at work (BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi dealer). "Special Order" parts take 7-10 days.

Sucks in general tho... hope all works out and its the right key!

I hope you were joking about the keys thing.

No joke.. There is seriously only one dude who makes all the keys for BMW (at least the bikes). He works in a locked cage, due to some supposedly secret process to make each key. I guess they use some type of special steel..

This is according to the dealer (who I have a great relationship with).

The key thing does make sense. That way people can't look at your vin (in the dash), and then get a key made. I remember seeing it on 60 minutes. They got a key in something like... 60 minutes. They broke into somebody's car. So I'm glad they wait. But then again, I've never had to wait for a key either.

wow thats nuts. it could be that they need him to get out and make extra keys and sell them to crooks so bwm's get stolen. btw dose your bike require the key with the chip in it that could be why also.
