View Full Version : Horrible gas mileage
ZX2 S/R Black

Okay, so my last fillup I got 17mpg... IDK what the problem is, any ideas?
I think I might smell a little gas sometimes when I get out of my car after driving it around for awhile...
Do you think I have a very bad tune or something? Think one of my injectors could be cracked or a fuel line or something?
Bottom line is this is the worst I've ever seen a ZX2 get, and it's pissing me off cause gas is costing me $4.29 a gallon.
any help or ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!!!
As always, thanks teamZX2 :)

Fuel filter, check for leaks in lines, tank, around injectors and rail, change pcv, air filter. tires properly inflated
See if that helps at all.

Do you smell it in the car? Could be the fuel pump seal.....

Check for leaks ,as has been said. Do you have a check engine light ? Is that why you are going to Autozone ? Maybe you have a neighbor who is helping himself to your gas. A locking gas cap will take care of that problem.

Doesn't matter... even if it was pedal all the way down all the time that shouldn't be even near that bad

Yes I do have a CEL... my fuel trims are maxed out... pretty sure I have a vacuume leak somewhere...

Ah ha! Tell us the code and maybe we can help more.
Flat to the floor does matter. When I run a track day I get between 8-10 mpg estimated.

WE can't see where it is leaking from.
We need to have the car in front of us.
Do it yourself or bring it to a shop, tomorrow.

Very true. The code may help pinpoint the problem.

if you put a header on and you didnt connect the FIRST 02 sensor i know for a fact you will notice a 50% decrease in mpg... just throwing that out there

You maybe a victim of gas theft. Someone could have siphoned some out.
It is getting common nowadays.
Just a thought.
But get that leak fixed. Under pressure, it could really lose a lot, and also be dangerous.

put some injector cleaner in it and see if that helps some times the injectors will stick open

You are also causing harm to the car by running it rich.

Thanks for the help guys, sorry I haven't updated, been really busy.
I just got 152 miles on 9.94 gallons of gas... YaY!!! that's like 15mpg :(.... Yea, I scanned my car and came up with 4 codes
P1000 OBD-II Monitor Testing Incomplete
P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1)
P1131 Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean - Bank No. 1
P1132 Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Sensor Indicates Rich - Bank No. 1
I am going to purchase a new 02 sensor tonight... hopefully it fixes my problem

Lean AND rich at the same time?
Definitely replace that front O2 sensor and see how much it improves.

^x2 bad o2 sensor is probably the culprit.

Not the only thing that needs cleaned/replaced/done though.
Do all of the basics...filters, clean MAF/TB/Intake, check plugs/wires/coil, replace fuel and air filter (or clean and oil it if a K&N), run some Chevron Techron through, check tire pressure...
