Well I have a linksys router and I had it hooked up to the internet at my other house and it worked fine. The conection there was a ethernet type and I brought it to my parents house and hooked it up to a dsl type conection and it dosent work. The wireless addaptor says the router is connected to it but the router is not connected to the internet what should I do.

Thanks
Kyle

Log into the router's interface locally and see if it pulls an ip address. DSL or Cable shouldn't make a difference, you're still going from the modem via ethernet either way into the router. They all pull dhcp public ip addresses either way... so log in, see what it pulls and lets go from there.

if your dsl is using a modem/router that could create a headache, modem/router;s assign a 192 IP that the linksys sometimes has no idea what to do with, also try resetting the router via the pinhole in the back, hold the button down for a good 30 seconds and then set everything back up

Why would you reset EVERYTHING and set it up all over again when you haven't even checked the interface to see what it's pulling in the first place. That's like saying "I'm not sure what it is, so go ahead and reset it and start from square one even though you haven't identified the basics." it takes a simple opening a web browser, logging into the router's interface and looking at the ip address to identify, then you don't have to set it all back up from default.

Why not if he is switching locations?
I always recommend resetting whenever you change networks....

If he is not overly knowledgable with computers, he can spend 45 minutes checking everything and screwing with settings, or spend 15 minutes resetting and re-configuring...

Because the default setting that 90% of ISPs use is DHCP and "Automatic". Therefore going from location to location he might just be resetting back to what it was. I highly doubt he had to manually enter an IP address at the other local if he just brought it there.

I'm simply saying why complicate something when you haven't even identified the basics in the first place.

Check your connections, check your settings to make sure you're getting your network information, see if you can get out (ping) and go from there.

Only time i've needed to reset my router is if I accidentally changed an admin password and couldn't get back in LOL. EVERYTHING else can be done from the interface (including changing anything he needs to).

Why is everyone's solution to set it all to default when they don't even know the guy on the other end and their settings?

Everyone has different solutions, and everyone has different technical abillities when it comes to this stuff. When you deal with people who don't know much about networking, DHCP defualt gateways and tcp/ip than a reset is always the easiest. Again, everyone has different ways of approaching issues like this

True. Perhaps I'm just grumpy. I've had a long day. I'll say nothing more. Apologies.

Carry on.
