k..well, i can't take credit for the spark plug cover..so don't even ask. but i do take credit for the powdercoating. this one was a pain to coat...for some reason, the powder coated really thick, it melted a bit more than it should have (i overbaked the first coat), and there was some small spots that kept leaching oil when i'd bake it. for some reason, there was oil coming out of the metal. lesson learned...pre-bake all parts from now on to see if there are trouble spots. the ford logo was a pain as well...i kept getting bubbling by the letters. i did what i could..and it looks damned sexy! i'm a perfectionist...and my own worst critic..but brad needs this thing ASAP, and everyone i showed it to said it looks awesome. here's pics:

^ford logo is after 2nd coat. after i took that pic..i took a plastic wire wheel to it, down to the metal..spent 2 hours picking powder out of the crevaces...and gave the whole thing a 3rd coat. the first 2 pics are after the 3rd coat. it'll be in the mail to you tomorrow afternoon, brad! now pay up :upsidenana:

i'll try to get better pics in sunlight tomorrow before i send it out...it's actaully quite a bit darker than that. the flash made it look much lighter.

Looks shit hot. my the red looks good with my carbon.

the plug wire cover took me a few days at work because i did it my spare time at work. not sure hiw much more work went into it for the powercaoting.

btw, i cant remember if i sent the VC bolts with the damn thing. Did i?

zxtwou2
05-28-2008, 04:11 PM
yeah you sent bolts..they are in a little baggy with the note you left for brad on the clear coat. as for me...it took longer than usual, since the cover kept leaching out oils in a couple spots, and the powder i was using was a polyesther base instead of the usual ceramic/TGIC/RAL/urethane/silicone bases i'm used to. start to finish for me...5 hours.

right on. dont feel bad about how many trys it took you, i used a whole can of clear on the carbon, and it still looks like shit IMO. it took several trys to get it to look like it is now. either shit getting in it, fisheyes, or a hazy finish. or as it is now with the texture from the peel-ply showing through.

^honestly the c/f looks good...just needs buffed with some mild rouge.

05-28-2008, 04:44 PM
yeah, i prefer to lay it on thick, it makes it look alot deeper. then buff the shit out of it.

You can....if you've got the money. Most real fab shops will be willing to do silly things like that for anyones car. I just hope your pockets are deep enough.....

did you sand blast the cover then sand it by hand? if not thats why you had problems

S/R
05-29-2008, 05:50 PM
yeah, I bead blasted it, blended out the casting flash and the VCT lettering and scotchbrited it. then i did the carbon fiber plug wire cover. then shipped it off to zxtou2 for the finish job. im pretty sure he did some more finish sanding as well.

Oh and as far as a Carbon Vavle cover yeah, it could be done. but an overlay would be WAY cheaper and easier to do. think just vacuum bagging carbon over the vavle cover and finish sandin and clear coating would all that would be needed for an overlay. a whole cover would require the use of a mold and some reinforcements with metal. also getting the sealing areas right would be a bitch.

not the valve cover....the cam gear cover u know the other black plastic piece that no longer matches the spark plug cover because its now carbon lol.....although a carbon fiber valve cover would be awesome

Can't. Broke the VCT seal on it and it won't be here until tuesday from Ford.

zxtwou2
06-01-2008, 10:57 PM
^is it the rubber seal on the v/c? if so...the powder melted to that...and i thought it'd be ok..it still seemed to be flexible, but wasn't sure.

Yah it is. It is still on there? Shit lol. That kind of sucks. Either way, if it is on there that's fine...because I'll throw it on there tomorrow then and get my $7 back haha.
