As if paying homage to Subaru, Toyota is co-developing a new lineup of rear-wheel-drive sporty coupes employing a revised version of the Subaru Impreza's platform, boxer engine and transmission. Toyota's largest contribution to the mix will be product planning and its impeccable quality control.

The Toyota model, still to be named, will be sold exclusively in Japan, while the Subaru-badged model will be marketed worldwide. The mechanical package will be identical, but both Toyota and Subaru will create exterior designs to differentiate their cars from each other.

The basis for this new radical project is to take Subaru's well-known 4WD powertrain and modify it to create a new rear-wheel-drive setup. Slated to be built at Subaru's Gunma plant in Japan, both Toyota and Subaru models will employ a revised version of the naturally aspirated boxer 2.0-liter unit generating around 220 horsepower at 6,500 rpm, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox from the current Impreza WRX STI.

Surprisingly, the joint Toyota-Subaru R&D team has chosen the out-of-production, front-wheel-drive Honda Integra Type R as its benchmark, because its styling, performance parameters and dimensions mirror what the development team wants to create.

Expected to ride on a 103-inch wheelbase, the 2,866-pound coupes will use a 2+2 seating configuration.

Slated for a late 2011 debut, the coupes are expected to be priced starting just under $20,000.

What this means to you: Good times on the horizon for fans of low-end rear-wheel-drive coupes. — Peter Lyon, Correspondent

So heres what I forsee happening: Toyota is either going to turbo charge their motor, and make it better then the subaru; Or they're going to have a sexier design. This is turn is gonna make me angry, because Japan gets all the good cars, and this is gonna be a kick ass Celica/Supra replacement that we can only have in a subaru variant.

Not to mention RWD; Now the article states that they only change between both cars is the exterior. But we all know, companies always have a card under their sleve.

How is this a Celica replacement if it's not being sold to the same market as the Celica was?

I think if you compare it to the older celica's, yeah it's a let down. But if you consider this a car of it's own, it's going to be a sweet ride

I think it looks great. A 2800lb car that is going to have the Subaru boxer engine pumping out an impressive 220hp NA. It is also going to be rear wheel drive. It looks better then any STi right now, and it is a 2 door. Which makes it all the sexier. Don't think of it as a celica replacement. That is a bad color arrangement. Orange with gold wheels? Lets get it in WRBlue or in Black and look at it. If it is as lego of a car as all the other subarus drop an STi block in it and you will have one sick ass car.

If it ends up being in my price range and gets decent mpgs, i'd consider it.

I'm interested to see how they get 220HP out of a 2.0L N/A at 6500rpm...almost impossible to do without a turbo or supercharger. At least they got the RWD right, it should be a pretty cool car when done.

I think it would be cool.

I wonder how they are getting 220hp out of the same engine they turbo to get 230....anyone see a bit of a problem there?

Yep...The 2.5L N/A boxer currently only makes 170HP. They must be turboing it, basically transplating the WRX drivetrain into this car except removing the front axles and making it RWD?

^^ thats what i was thinking. I might consider getting one even though i've never liked subarus.

Maybe it'll rev to 8,000rpm?

All I care about is the price tag, and maybe the MPG.

Dude, that thing looks awesome! 220 pony engine, with RWD? If they make it light enough, that would be a fun ride.
