No 3G. Its the wireless network the phone connects to. Its faster than 2G but not as fast as a WiFi connection. There will be a 8gig and a 16gig phone.
Correct me if I am wrong, please.

$199 for 8 gig, $299 for 16gig I believe.
They are going to kill the market, it is kinda cool. Smartphones are either going to have to drop their prices or become a thing of the past because Apple is also release Firmware V2 which is going to allow for a lot of external programming. I won't be getting one, i'll stick with my normal one. They are all getting FW v2.0. This is just a brief reading of an article.

Iphone3G has got GPS which is pretty cool, along with all the other stuff.
However, its also still on a network that isn't overly great on the East Coast.
Sprint has got Apple locked in, and Verizon still makes huge profits, but they'd make larger profits if they have a killer phone manufacturer.

By Sprint do you mean At&t? Yeah is this real GPS? The regular kinda has GPS but it uses other cell towers to bounce your position around.

Soooooo is the $200/$300 prices going to be the price if you get AT&T service after discounts or will it be $200/$300 no matter what and that's what I'll pay before I unlock it? THAT! is the biggest question right now.

200-300 no matter what. No discouts. Extra 10 dollars per month for 3g service. So instead of 60 it will be $70 a month. They will make their money back. Also, you have to activate phone at apple or at&t store to ween off unlocking.

If that is the case, I will be buying a 16gig next month :). I'm not worried about the unlocking thing, I've got a good buddy that is a pro at unlocking phones :).

The problem is you have to pay for the phone and activate it at purchase...You can't buy an unlocked phone and with each purchase you are locked into a new 2 yr contract.

No you dont activate phone at purchase. You buy it in the store and you activate it thru itunes when you get home.Thats what I did since i already had an att account.new service you will have to activate at the store.Dont go to the apple store to buy it,they will only accept credit cards to buy the iphone.Att will accept either cash or credit cards.

Right you did that with the old phones, the new phones they are requiring activation at purchase.

eh.. Not impressed.
My Sprint Mogul PPC-6800 comes with EV-DO Rev A networking, so I get 1MB/sec downstream.. It also has the built in GPS (with damn fine reception of the sats).. Plus its Windows Mobile Pro 6, which means I can run Google Maps for free.. Navigation, Directions, Turn by Turn with GPS, etc.. Plus a qwerty keyboard. I threw a 2GB Micro-SD in the bottom to hold my stuff, but then again I get unlimited data for $15/month, so I just stream what i want to listen too ;c)
3G network? Welcome to 2 years ago.. OooOoOoOo

Once you use an iphone you just see where the appeal is...Nothing can compete with it.

lol, the old edge iphone didnt have any gps, but yes you are correct it uses cell tower triangulation to guess where you are, its relativly close my blackjack 2 does the same thing in google maps, until you enable gps(a simple menu selection)
i think the iphone is a sexy, and very flashy and eye friendly, and before it was highly overpriced, but with the new lower price tag, it will be in consideration when its time for a new phone. but im more than likely gona hold out for the blackjack 3(if it ever makes it) because i JUST renewed a couple months ago.

apple is just teh shit in those little toys... the iPod dominates, and so the iPhone...
and yeah. Nothing can compete.

when i got my 30gig video i said my next upgrade was going to be an apple phone (before they were even talking about it). I said a 30gig vid was perfect and just needed to be able to dial numbers. Then a little while down the road the iphone came out but was way to pricey and my 30gig was still in perfect shape.
Now, at $300 for the 16gig, i really can't pass it up.

same for me ^^
now I just need to sell my 30gig video... for 150 tops :(

I don't feel it's the features that set the iPhone apart from the rest of the smartphone world. It does what smartphones have been doing for years... however, it does have the "cool" factor, it' s super sleek and the storage is nice to have. The price is what's really going to kill the traditional smartphone makers. $300 for a smartphone with 16GB of storage blows anything else out of the water in terms of value, especially when we still have PPC's that only have 128MB of storage retailing for $450-550 with 2 year contracts.
I still like PPC's to be honest, and there's no way I will ever go back to AT&T, but Apple is doing something right... and we all know competition is good for consumers... Apple is going to single-handedly drive the price of smartphones and PPC's down, which is good for everyone.

isnt AT&T the equivalent of Rogers in Canada? is AT&T crap in the US? cuz in Canada, Rogers dominates in term of quality of service, availability and etc,...

AT&T needs to do some re-evaluation of their "more bars in more places" (or is that Cingular?? I don't know... same company) ads to be honest. Whenever I had problems (which was all the time) I'd call in and never get someone who speaks english, which makes it hard to deal with the person when you can't understand them. Also, I had a ton of dropped calls and network coverage was spotty at best (and still is for my friends that use AT&T). Items showing up on my bill that I couldn't get adjusted or didn't authorize was another problem.
Since switching to Verizon, I have had none of those problems. I rarely ever have a dropped call, I always have some kind of network coverage... it may not be EV-DO 100% of the time, but I have enough to make and keep calls connected and receive my emails and texts. I have no problems with billing, and the times I've had to call in and speak to someone, they speak english and take care of my problem the first time.
I will be the first to admit, though, that I like the direction Apple is taking the phone industry. Extreme value and a lower cost are two things we've been needing for a long time.
