My dad just bought a 52" Samsung LCD, and he wants to get a PS3 for blu-ray purposes. Obviously just the 40 gb, because its just for blu-ray but if you can get that for $400 and a player for $400, who wouldn't get the PS3? Anyways, is there anywhere cheaper then $399?

Shit, LOL

I just found one on craigslist:

60 gb, 2 controllers, madden 07, motorstorm, and def jam icon for $400, the same price as a new 40gb.

craigslist is your best bet. Everytime I call on one, however...its gone.

I know a while back the online Sony store (www.sonystyle.com) would give you a $100 discount when you signed up on their credit card. I don't know if that is still going, but it was a pretty good deal.

Okay, I guess they aren't doing that anymore. They do 18 months no interest though, so that would make it cheap!

The 40 gig sucks I know two ppl with them and the totally short you on SD slots and usb plug ins if u are using it to play with games with i would recommend 60 or bigger even the 40gb casing is even made cheaper... I cant believe they made is so crappy!!!! but if it is only being used for blu ray I cant see a complaint.....(mine stoped playing blu rays, 60gb I have to send it in)

Right now, Wal-mart is doing a $100 gift card towards the purchase of any Blu-ray player. So you can get a PS3 for $300! Pretty good deal man. I love mine.

my friend just bought his like two weeks ago... so we heard about that 100 dollar gift card he took it back and got another ps3 with 100 bucks good deal!!!
If you have a 40 and a 60 or 80 gb side by side you can see what I am talking about how chincy the 40 is ... to save 100 bucks they rape you of every plug in and the case is soooo cheesy! sony disappoints me

with that tv your better off buying a sony bdp-s500. the ps3 has old firmware and has far less features than the blu ray play i just mentioned. plus its on sale at circuitcity. i just had my uncle buy this player for his new 52" samsung and its amazing. the ps3 that he has couldnt keep up.

Old firmware? Less features? The only thing that the S500 can do that the PS3 can't is bitstream Master Audio and True HD tracks. So if you just have to have your receiver say the words "Master Audio", go ahead and spend the money. The PS3 internally decodes those two tracks, and sends it out as multichannel LPCM. You get the same sound either way.

The S500 doesn't even do Blu-ray Live, which is a relatively new feature brought in the 2.0 profile. I think the PS3 is the only Blu-ray player that has that ability.

Maybe your uncle needs to get better firmware on his PS3, because it's one of the best Blu-ray players on the market.

how does it have old firmware when it is the only player out with the ability to update the firmware.......

Hmmm, I have the 40 gig. So far I've managed to use 1 of the front USBs at a time and had no need for any of the other "missing" ports. If you have a SD card, just get a USB SD card reader and plug it in. This is really a very small feature to worry about. In my entire life I've done 1 slideshow with jpgs from a SD card. This really isn't a make or break input.

My uncle just did this last night. It only worked on the 40gig.

Biggest mistake he could have made. The PS3 forces you to update firmware. The PS3 is constantly one of the fastest players on the market and as the technologies increase, the firmware increases. Your uncles new player will be worthless in less than a year, yet a 3 year old PS3 will be on par with the current offerings.

Anyways, unless you get the PS3 2nd hand you're not going to find it for less than 399/499. Keep an eye out for special deals on them though. In the past I've seen free controlers, free games, free movies, and gift cards bundled with the systems. The only real benifit to the 80 gig is the backwards compatable stuff. Personally for me, I don't own a single PS2 title and will never buy one. If you do have a ton of PS2 titles, odds are you have a working PS2. So its still pretty pointless. If your PS2 is dead or your out of inputs I could see where you'd be upset if you couldn't play your older games *shrug*

As for the 40g v 80g HDD size, you can buy the 40g and then swap out the HDD for a $100 300gig HDD and sell the 40g on ebay. You can even put Yellow Dog Linux on it for free and turn your PS3 into a computer. I <3 going online with a 50" screen. Its amazing!! The PS3 is plug and play with the HDD's so its a pretty simple job. Plenty of walk throughs on the net.

I am not saying the 40 is crap the just jip you on ports 40gb.... dont be a tight ass and you woulnd have to spend the other money on the sd card reader... it has like two extra usb ports, sd slot, prostick slot, and a CF slot... not to mention the case again 40gb casing=crap chincy.. 60 gb+ good quality casing!!! ( I also like my stuff to look decent)

sony is constantly updating firware for the ps3!! hell half the time I have to wait 20 min for the update before i can even play!!

I looked around online for complaints about the lack of USBs and it seems its moslty the people that use the PS3 for rock band while charging remotes with more than 2 peeps playing and odd things like that. I really don't see why you'd need more than 2 USBs, and IF you end up needing more, buy a cheap hub to use as needed. The SD reader is still a mute point.

What is all this garbage you are spewing about the cases being differant? I couldn't find a single thing mentioning any differances between the consoles. The only thing I noticed was the 20 is missing the chrome finish. The 40,60 and 80gig models have it. What makes it look so differant? My 40 gig case is solid, shiney, and nice looking.

I still say if you don't have PS2 games, don't need to use the system to read SD cards, and you don't need more than 2 USBs, the 80 gig is pointless. Just upgrade the HDD to something MUCH larger, for much less money IF you ever have the need for more space.

In the case of the OP, the system will be used as a bluray with the bonus of being able to play games. This tells me that he doesn't need any of the features of the 80gig at all.

*shrug*

thats a good point... the casing is cheesier though I know a hand full of ppl with 40 gb and they are just not the same quality... not that it makes a difference my 60gb just looks a little better quality.... for instance the playstation3 on the top I have seen all 40 gb look all bumpy where the mold was formed... mine is not like that at all.. and the prostick is nice becuase i own a cybershot.... EVENTHOUGH my ps3 reciently have taken a crap I have to send it in this week for repair/replacement

Right, okay, so... Back on topic

I checked Target.com, Walmart.com, Circuitcity.com, and Gamestop.com. The only specials are on the 80gig bundled with MGS4 and Ccity is running a deal where you buy the 40gig and MGS4 and you get a free bluray remote ($20 value). So if your not in the hurry to buy right now, I'd watch the ads and maybe wait until the July 4th ad for a special free bundle. It might score you a free movie ($30 value) free controller ($50 value) or a game ($60 value) or any of the above.

Gamestop.com claims you can get a used system for $350.

You can also check Amazon.com and Newegg.com as well as other places to see deals. Maybe a stop to cheapassgamer.com would help as well. If this isn't the correct URL, google it. Its a great site to find good gaming deals.
