I started my car today and let it run for a minute or two. I found some interesting stuff about it today. I get a lot of smoke from the head and non from the block. It idles well considering how much oil it blows from the dipstick tube and revs pretty good.

I have yet to do a compression test on it, I'm lacking the compression tester. And I haven't yet checked the spark plugs to make sure they are in good shape. I'm pretty sure the VCT is screwed up running the exhuast cam off timing, I didn't know I was supposed to set it a certian way when installing it. It ran fine so I assumed it was working properly, it may have been correct but I'm not sure.

I have all these old timers telling me that running my PCV to the atmosphere caused my rings to go bad but I know there are more than a handfull of people doing it that way with no problems.

I'll try and get a video of it tomorrow so you guys can hear it and maybe throw some input my way. I'd love to think I could take the head off, replace the gasket put it back on there and have my car running again.

running pcv to the atmo will make your rings not seat right. Overtime on a n/a block it will take 25l+ to notice this, on a boosted motor, it will happen within a 1000 miles. You'll see scuffing down the cylinder walls, and pistons too.

I have the timing tool set if you need to barrow one.

I've run my PVC open for two years without issue.

because you dont notice anything, doesn't mean there isn't a problem. Pull apart your motor. You'll see what I mean.

I've talked to a couple people in the area that do turbo builds and they highly doubt that my rings went bad. I've been told it's probably a combination of the head lifting and the valve seals going bad.

I have 170+ psi compression in all cylinders. I don't need to pull it apart to tell that I don't have any ring damage. This engine has over 170,000 miles on it. For all I know, I could just be lucky. But since I'm venting from the PCV and the valve cover, I think I have enough flow to prevent the blow-by from building up. I also don't have any oil leaks and it does not burn oil.
