I'm looking at a 2001 cougar, v6, with 53k miles on it for 7,990. Any opinions?

Not that it really helps anything but I have always liked the look of them....

My dad has one, there alright. Same engine as the KL series mx-6 V6. Somewhat infamous for high upkeep, always replacing his alternator, they almost always start burning oil after 90,000 miles. For a v6 he gets reasonable gas mileage, usually hovers around 32mpg, keep in mind he drives like the old man he is

I'd sport one. The price seems right.

my mom has one, she is selling it, cus she likes the fuel efficiency of the protege she bought. the cougar is sand color, with the 2.5l duratech. a 1999 model.

Same problem here with the alternator constanly going out, its a b*%c# to replace, i heard.

My friend has one gets around 23mpgs driving ok (mixed fast/slow driving). The hatch squeeking is also a problem I hear. But its a pretty quick car with the Duratec V6. If you do decide to get it remove the cat, and run a straight exhaust. It has two precats one off of each header. The car sounds awesome especially as you get higher in the rpms. good luck with the buy though the price sounds about right. My friend got his with a little less miles on it for a little over 5 or 6k? I cant remember exactly how much he spent.

I got a 1999 Mystique recently. It's my new love.

The Duratec V6 is similiar but not the same as the KLDE. Ford basically had their way with the engine it seems to me.

They do need upkeep, but the engine is awesomely strong.

I haven't gotten rid of my cats yet but when I get a Y pipe I'm hoping that lowers the start of the powerband to 4k. The current powerband is 5k to 6.5k (rev limit). It's fast as hell when your on the powerband but such a high powerband on a V6 is definitely more of a challenge to drive fast.

With the miles that car has I wouldn't worry about it. The engine is sweet and the Cougars interior is pretty damn sweet. Go for it.

I'm a Cougar owner, and I really like mine, since it has low miles you shouldnt have any problems, but they do have problems w/ altanators. But other than that they have good handling, not that fast w/o mods but I really like mine.

Post pictures!

I hope it's not purple.

There was a purple one with a body kit for sale somewhat near here awhile back, it looked pretty good, except the whole purple part of course

What the hell is wrong with purple?!?!?! LOL...jk. My first car was a 97 purple escort wagon. Quickly gained the name of "The Barney Mobile". Great car, not so great color.

Yeah, what's wrong with driving a car that looks like a Prehistoric pedophile?

Yeah I forgot I had no digi cam. I had a girl take some pictures from me but she said she wont put them up til she can drive it haha.

Would it be a bad idea to hook up two 800 watt audiobahn subs in there? I had them in my focus and it slammed. However, all this talk about a weak alternator has me worried.

Thats a good looking car, the 01-02's look the best I think. Any plans for it? Also you can come over to newcougar.org if ya want/need any advice. I'm a member over there too.
