I've used a tradtional soldering gun a few times when doing electrial on my cars. Now I have to do some more and I was contemplating buying one of these.

I've read some good reviews but I'm wondering if anyone has one or uses one and how they feel about it.

I personally don't like it because you have to have it touch the wire in a certain way otherwise it wont work. I think how it works is it creates a short and gets hot to melt the solder. I would much rather use a traditional soldering iron, lot less hassle and works all the time.

Never used one but I haven't ever heard great things about them either. I just use a regular soldering iron.

I have a gun too, I hate it. Started using my brothers iron whenever he leaves it here. So much better.

I have one and I LOVE IT.
Bought mine at Harbor Freight for $16. :)
If you know how to use it, the job is does is as good or better than with a traditional soldering iron and it's impossible to burn yourself or the table you're working on. I soldered my CCRM on the dining room table with it last week.

Thanks for your input guys. Decided to go with the traditional iron over the new fangled one. Too much negative feed back.
Thanks,

they are good if you dont have a plug or are working in a tight place where you could burn other stuff easy

The Cold Heat soldering iron will give you a poor solder connection. I've had to clean-up many customer induced problems from these.

the cold heat soldering iron creates cold solders too i've found. when i used one, i'd get hazy solder joints, and you have to do it just right to get it to work anyway. i usually use a desktop one...or if i'm out on the shop floor, i have a Bernz-o-Matic butane soldering iron that works AMAZINGLY. it heats up really fast...and i can take the tip off and use it for a heat shrink gun.

yeah a gas soldering iron is the best portable solution.
I HATE my cold heat soldering iron.

FYI I have no fucking clue how to solder. It was way too small for me to do and the iron I bought was too hot.
I took it to an electronic's place the guy did it for free.

The tips break easily, and they have to be positioned right to work.
A regular pencil tip is best, or a small butane soldering torch.
