I'm trying to get an idea of what schools there are near Athens, if you guys could give me some insight I'd appreciate the help. I'm gearing more towards a good technical school but I am not closed off to the idea of going to a traditional school. I just don't like studying.

Since I don't live there but do plan on moving, I have no idea what's to offer near where. I'll probably be staying with my family in Madison until I can get some work and a steady place to stay in Athens or the surrounding area.

Thanks guys

The Athens area has three major schools:

Obviously there is the University of Georgia. I go there. Around 33k students, Southeastern Conference (FTW), and plenty of majors. I don't study a lot but you do have to do your work when the time comes.

Then there is the Athens Campus for Gainesville State University. Some majors, maybe 3k students. Most people use Gainesville State to get core out of the way and then transfer to UGA. The main plus for you would be that the campus is the closest to Madison and would be very easy to commute to.

Finally there is Athens Technical College. I don't know much about Athens Tech but i do know it is mostly a 2 year school that is probably like most other technical schools.

Madison is less than 30 minutes from Athens, in fact I drive through there every time I go home for the weekend. I won't be back up in Athens until early August, but I will be happy to show you around when you get here.

Thanks for the quick response carguy! I'd write something longer but I'm trying to get used to this phone. It's taking me forever to write out simple sentences. I'll respond back again when I have the computer on.

I've put some thought into attending the technical school for drafting but I just don't know anything about it. As far as driving distance, I'll be living in the Athens area most likely so the commute wouldn't be a bid deal either way.

The biggest problem I see is not knowing anything about the area in general. I have no clue where anything is... I'd like to go back to Madison with my grandma when she leaves town next week and spend a few days sight seeing. It probably won't work out because we lost a worker and I'll be pulling 7 day work weeks until we find a replacement.

yeah i will tell you driving around athens gets very confusing if you aren't familiar with the area. if you are familiar with "the loop" (georgia highway 10 i think is the actual name), athens tech is right off of it.

when i moved up there i drove around the area for a few hours one day (gas was cheaper), it really helped me out. of course i still have alot to learn about the area.

I was looking at that loop today on a map. It kinda reminds me of driving to Indianopolis to visit zx2fast. I'm pretty good with directions and getting around, after a couple days I'm sure I'll have a nice map in my head.

I also looked at that site to see what they had available as far as classes at Athens Tech. It seems that their tuition is a little cheap, almost comparible to Cali. I'm just curious if those credits earned there are transferable to UGA.

i looked at the accreditation on the site and they are not clear about that. i know for a fact that any core class (<3000 level) you take at Gainesville State will be accepted at UGA. if you are looking to transfer to UGA i would recommend going to Gainesville State. the classes at Athens Tech will be more specific and are usually for a Associates Degree.

I called Athens tech today to ask them about what classes will transfer over and the woman told me most of the core classes will but the electives are at the universities discrection. So I'd have to bring in a list of the classes I would take for my major and cross check them with UGA.
