So, as some of you know I traded in the Z yesterday. I've been looking for a couple months and finally found what I was looking for. I bought a MK4 VW GTI. This car is unbelievably fun. It has the 1.8t 180hp engine. GTI's are pretty heavy, so I expected to need a few mods before I felt any quickness... but I was wrong. As soon as boost begins to build, this thing hauls. If I turn off the anti-slip control, the thing spins the tires through 1st and into second gear. Pretty impressive considering it's still completely stock with 225/45/17's.

The nice thing is that this motor responds very well to mods. I should be well over 210hp to the wheels after a remapped ecu, downpipe, exhaust, and an intake. It's amazing to have a car with an actual aftermarket too, lol. Anyways, here's some pics. Let me know what you think. BTW, you all should buy me stuff in the For Sale section so I can start building my V-dub.

I like that older body style A LOT more than the newer ones.

I test drove a blue one but decided against it because of how expensive my Jetta was to repair.

It was fun on the highway though.

Thanks bro. I'm loving it. I ordered an intake today. I'm getting a new diverter valve, downpipe and turbo timer this weekend as well.

Gonna drop it?

JoshDank

yea, but probably not until I'm done with the exhaust and chipping it. If I find a god deal, my priorities might change though, lol.

well if you were going to get out of your ZX2, at least it was for another (very) nice car.
Gotta love a car that comes with a turbo from the factory :)

Thanks.

So far... I threw on a cold air intake and replaced the stock stereo. I ordered a new downpipe last night. After the downpipe, I'll probably throw it on the dyno at work and see where I'm at.

Eventually. I actually like the stock 17's, but I'll probably end up getting some 18's at some point.

Alrighty!

So here's pics of the cold air intake and my stereo install. The color of the intake actually matches the cars paint really well, but the flash made it look a little funky.

As for the stereo... I hate the radio and I hate carrying around cd's, so I was stoked to swap out the stock HU. The new HU is a Panasonic I pulled from the j/y a while back. Motorized face, 3 band EQ, mp3/wma player, and a set of rca aux in's (needed for the next part). The silver unit above the Panasonic is my OmniFi. It sucks they don't make them anymore, but I love it. Basically I have a unit I mounted in the hatch area that houses my 60GB hard drive. The dash unit simply controls it and displays artist/album/track for my mp3's on the hard drive. Gotta say, the stock speakers are pretty decent, so I won't be in a huge rush to replace them. Let me know what you think.

Looks very nice. Sound any different with the intake? I'd ask if you felt any difference, but intakes only add so much hp...lol

Nice deck.

Actually the CAI picked up a decent amount of power. The hot air under the hood with the turbo really warms the the air with the stock box. The new intake puts the filter just in front of the front tire.

As for sound... It's a huge difference. The GTI is a re-circulated system, so it's pretty quiet stock. With the intake, the thing sounds like a jet engine under hard acceleration and I'd swear it was venting to the atmosphere if I didn't know better.

That's a pretty sweet stereo set up. I have the classic wireless fm modulator for my iPod..................... It sucks, but I can't afford a nice setup (ya know, one that's wired...)

LOL. Yea I rocked the FM transmitter for a while when I first got my Z. Glad I don't anymore.

Well that just kicks ass. Good to know that the intake wasn't just to make it look purdy...lol

I'm glad to see you're modding it. They are great platforms, get all the bolt ons and then tune it, will be a quick VW.

Modding factory turbo cars is great, I just ordered a intake and BPV for my Mazdaspeed 3, adds 15-20 hp and 10-15 tq to the wheels, can't wait! ha

JoshDank
07-23-2008, 08:13 AM
Sweet. Yea, any car with a power adder from the factory will usually respond well to mods. I can't wait to get a tune on it, should put me a little over 200 hp at the wheels.

LOL. Yea I rocked the FM transmitter for a while when I first got my Z. Glad I don't anymore.

And actually I can't technically even do that because I don't have a working power cord that will plug into the transmitter.
