I think ny clutch is on its way out.

I took my car out this morning, and on the way home, it wouldn't go into 3rd, and when it did, it clicked in (Like the syncronizers rattling). At the stop sign, I went into first, let out the clutch, nothing but RPM's. 2nd, Same issue, 3rd went in, but in order to move, id burn my clutch to shit trying to start from 3rd. I had a car push me, and used 3rd the 3 blocks home, blowing all the stop signs.

I get in my driveway, now all of a sudden, its working again. WTF.

Orriginal clutch has 130k miles on it.

From what I have been hearing, Stock clutches are more reliable and last longer than the after markets.

Can a few people comment on this and verify or deny.

My mechanic (My father) Even said personal experiance says that OEM clutches are better. Only issue is he is going off his vehicle experiance in the past. You know, an old Turino and GTO, all cars older than 1975. I can get a performance clutch through my work (NAPA) for pretty cheap, as I get Cost +10%, and its a ZOOM...

Yes, stock is fine. Unless you're racing, OEM set-up has enough grip. Just keep in mind the dif fails soon. Gather your parts first long before you undertake the project on. Some of the parts you'll need may not be in stock when you need them. Pre-order in advance (gaskets, seals, even an exhaust stud/nut or 2). Make sure to rent a pilot bearing removal slide-hammer from AutoZone (saves time, makes life easier). Re-lube all seals, especially the tie-rod ball. Ask us for help if you get stumped along the way.

Alright. Noted. I really don't do much racing, if any at all. But I do want the extra bit in case I do. Im more of a light to light racer, as I dont agree with high speed street racing.

Regaurdless, I want something that will last, and have the performance. Will I still get the lastability and performance from an Aftermarket, as I would a OEM replacement?

Haha, Yea. First time, but to be honest, no REAL issues before this. Worst that had happened was an oilpan replacement due to a hole. And with 130k original miles on everything, I suppose its overdue. Dealer said standard life is 86k miles, then again, what the hell do they know!

Actually looks like I need a new shifter assembly. So if anyone goes to a pick n pull find out what they charge for one. All the ZX2's at mine are ATX. Is there any other vehicle I can pull one from? A focus or mustang?

Have a LINK for me to buy one? And is it the whole shifter assembly. Mine was rotted and popped through the floor X_X

I have a 98 ZX2 MTX. (Obviously.)

I lost the quote from the aftermarket flywheel makers who said the: "the stock pressure plate produces more than enough grip". Since you're going to take it apart, consider the 11lbs flywheel. Or at least get to original fwheel turned. Also check out performance Urthn MTX and motor mounts, then add the dual engine torque dampers to the firewall.

Yea, the verdict seems i'm just going to buy a new tranny, and replace the clutch. http://car-part.com/ Is great for finding cheap used parts. Like having unlimited junk yards on my PC. Father found it. Used it to get a Straight 6 4L for a jeep, and a Transmission for a jeep. No problems.

Well, Went to a local pick and pull today, walked out with a Shifter assembly and a new transmission! 150$ total. You have no Idea how lucky I was. I talked to Ford, and he told me any 5 speed escort 97-03 would work for the shifter assembly, So I found one, and instantly hopped in. Not 5 seconds later My father called to me "Hey, ZX2 Here, Red.... 5 Speed"

So, I ran to that one, we looked under the hood, NO ENGINE! Still a tranny! Took maybe 1hr to pull everything. Few bolts, lifted it out the hood, and walked away. They are going to crush the car next week. Nothing left but the steering wheel, seats, and e-brake. Doors are smashed, panels gone. Fenders are good, bumper is melted and front cover is snapped.

Christ, Had it popped out of the 2 gears, was stuck in 1, now were back to stuck in 2.
I think its time to just switch trannies, and try and rebuild the old one.
Any one ever had this problem??
