anyone heard of them? supposed to decrease lag. chrysler used them in the early 80s and the new 911 uses one.
i havent been able to figure out why they arent used more commonly if they work so much better tho.
i saw some stuff on focaljet where someone was running an aerodyne vnt turbo but i cant figure out where someone could buy one from... anyone have any ideas? preferrably on a new one.

Variable vane turbo or something. From what I remember reading, the mechanism and materials used where not good enough back then. Meaning a very short lifespan. Metallurgy and technology is good enough now for a decent lifespan. Hence why they are using it again. But very very pricey for obvious reasons.
Don't know who makes them now or anything. Good luck finding one. I hope you're really well off if you want to buy one.

volvos huh? didnt know that. maybe ill see if i could find a listing of that.
from everything i can find garrett makes/made them and then some places say aerodyne does but their site is just all about motorcycle stuff. so idk.
they also say that they spool pretty early (like as early as 1800k!) too soon for me. that would make getten good gas mileage a pain. but idk because if there on a Porsche then it may be good enough for me. lol.
and yes i would anticipate large costs.

they were garretts on the volvo, and i believe shelby was playing with them back in the early 80's also.

Variable nozzle turbine, they have been around for awhile, they are spendy and mostly used in race aps, yes they are awesome for creating a wide range of power and fast spool time. The vanes turn similar to a prop on an airplane. allowing more or less air to be pushed, Check out a book called maximum boost by corky bell, google it and its on PDF, alot of great info for anyone wanting to learn about turbo's

that books free?!?! didnt know that. i was gonna see if my gf would buy it for my bday. but maybe ill just print it off and take it to mex with me tomorrow night for some beach reading.
but smiley ur pretty much saying that it would be hard to stay out of boost on a dd? bc thats how i understood them to be. might be great for racing tho.

I know they were used a lot on diesels. The lower exhaust temps of the diesel engine allowed for a longer lifespan. Petrol engines burn a lot hotter, which puts a lot more stress on them. There are quite a few different types of variable turbines. I can't remember them off the top of my head, but a key thing that makes them harder to use is the high temps of petrol engines.

fwdperformance.com sells new and rebuilt chrysler turbos rangeing from 700 to 900 dollars. they work beautifully, they dont just reduce lag they elliminate lag. supercharger with out paracidic drag

Exhaust temps on a diesel are much hotter than a petrol engine. like stated above vnt's are really nice turbo's. Ford starting putting them in the 6.0's and now the new 6.4's i believe.

where did u hear that about ford? im not questioning u at all i would just like to know so that i can read up on it.
and the more ive been thinkin about these the better they sound. i thought before the boost would be coming on too early but i dont think that would be a problem at all.

wow looks like there actually is alot more out there than i thought. there just mostly used on diesels. would those work on a gas engine or no?

they would. just pick the right size turbo. turbo's on diesels are usually large. diesels have no problem spooling huge turbo. Gas car's starve for air, diesels starve for fuel.vnt helps alot tho. speeds up spool.

yea im sure theres small enough ones that would work fine for a small gas engine
