how far can you advance or retard the cam gears safley with out them(valves) hitting? and what exactley does the sct do for your car?

If the head is milled, the engine has high compression pistons, or the cams are long duration or high lift, you can have potential problems.
Stock is not a problem. 6-8 degrees is all you would ever change, and stock can handle it.
SCT is Superchips Custom Tuning. It can set your isle speed, eliminate or vary the VCT, but mostly gets it's power from advancing the ignition timing and changing the fuel mixture a bit.
It is one of our best options. For an auto trans, it is about the only option in those areas. An MTX can use a S/R computer, like an NGP0 and get nice gains.

well i have a gude head (bye bye stock) so would it be safe to run with the VCT functional or should i remove it to be safe? the reason i ask is i was wondering if i should bother investing in adjustable cams or is there any point? it sounds like the the sct is an air/fuel controller that advances ignition timing correct?

SCT is a method of tuning. Yes, it does exactly what Mech said. Also, if you're installing a ported and milled head with new cams, you will not see maximum gains without some method of tuning (SCT or something else).
Not sure about the VCT question though.

You can actually tune your VCT to make more power. So it's not a bad thing. You just need to spend time on the dyno to get it right. Which is what you should do with a good tune anyways.
As far as cam timing goes, from my own personal experience, with stock internals and a high rev intake cam adjusted pretty much anywhere and you won't have any contact problems. When we had first put our cam in (and adjustable cam gear), the timing was off, and it threw a CEL. It had been like that for a long time, so I was trying different cam positions trying to get rid of it. Well, I did 10 degrees both ways, and nothing ever hit, so yeah...

yes, you should be able to run the vct with the head milled, I ran a stock head with 11:1 pistons and .400 lift cams, was able to adjust the gears to =/-15* and never had them hit..

what do you mean by stock internals?

no internal work done as far as rods/pistons

nope none of that. not unless a problem arises down there. does anyone else have a Gude head paackage?
