Cook county (Chicago) has emissions testing. They will pull any codes first, then in the case of a FWD/RWD car they will put it on rollers and sniff it. With out a CAT you are guaranteed a fail. A full exhaust alone wont fail but a cat less one will. Once you fail you then have I belive 60 or 90 days to fix it and get a retest. I have no idea what happens after that.

They test every 4 or 6 years I believe.

Good luck.

4 or 6 dam thats long in Racine WI wich is just past the border its every 2 years, but i hate when states do that crap where they only test in the south side of the state but in wisconsin the norhtern cities dont have emissions i think that is how it is in IL to, the north has to test but i dont think the south has to

cook county and maybe another county or two in the chicagoland area are the only emmissions places in IL...the other 90 or so counties don't have it.

If your car is '96 or newer (being a ZX2 it must be), the emissions people only connect to your OBD-II harness and look for codes and check to see that your check engine light works. They only have to run the pre-96 model years on the dyno. And even if they do try to run your car on the dyno (rollers) I would stop them right away and demand an explanation, and then walk (drive) out. I've seen the way they drive other cars wouldn't trust them AT ALL with my Z. If you have no codes there should be no reason for them to have to run it.

So, that being said, since you don't have a cat. you can use a nice little O2 sensor simulator so that your PCM still thinks its reading clean exhaust. This will keep you PCM free of codes. I've never seen them actually do an inspection to physically look for a cat. SO as long as ur PCM is clear you're in good shape. Oh, and I'm pretty sure the testing is every 2 years.

i will ask my cuz he lives in the same county as my self on wether oor not he has to get his tested or what not... I was just wondering how hard the tests were. Thanks guys for all the inout i appreciate it verymuicg but when my exhaust comes off in two weeks i might throw a high flow cat in there just to be safe.( god i hate having to cajange the oil pan gasket but i guess i will be killing 2 birds with one stone on this fixer upper.

Other suburban counties near Cook also have emissions testing: DuPage, Kane, Will, Lake, McHenry, and maybe Kendell.

Also, some near East St. Louis, [not sure about Springfield/Rockford/Peoria?]
