I am looking for a CHEAP ZX2 in good condition (ie. no rust), MTX with or without an engine. I intend to make an electric ZX2 which is why I don't care what condition the engine is in. I am also open to other small to mid sized cars.
I am located in Toledo, OH 43615. I have friends in Columbus and Cleveland that I could probably store a broken down car at until I can arrange to have it towed back to Toledo.

Cheap, and in good condition is going to be hard to find. Craigslist is your best option for it though. Why not build up a high fuel mileage one? For roughly 3k you can bump a zx2 to do 40+mpg on the highway.
Let me know if you wish to do this. I may be able to set you up with such a machine.

I've been checkin craigslist via crazedlist.org weekly. Haven't seen a ZX2 that fit the bill within reasonable distance. There does seem to be an abundance of Pontiac Sunfires, Chevy cavaliers, and Saturns. There's a Probe that I may end up buying, but I was hoping to find a ZX2 because I have a spare set of wheels.
You've peaked my curiosity. What costs 3k that would bump up the fuel economy? I already get ~35mpg so in order to get to a break even point would probably be close to 100k + miles thus not worth it.

Well, 3k would encompass a number of things.
Intake, PNP head with higher compression, cams, singh grooves combined with an SCT tune, headers, and exhaust, and escort 5th gear combined with stock width rims/tires should net you well over 40mpg. I would set 40mpg as the base of what you can get, I think you'd likely get closer to 50mpg with all of above. Plus, you'd have more power than a civic SI. If you did it all at a shop closer to 5k-7k. If you only did the headwork at the shop and everything else yourself 3k.
Also, be careful about choosing a zx2 to convert to an electric. Electric engines have a lot of torque. That's something the zx2 differential doesn't handle very well. You'd be better off trying to find a ford escape with a manual in it for your conversion. The transmission in there is nearly bullet proof when it comes to torque.
The cheapest thing you could do is get an sct economy tune with intake, headers, exhaust and do the 5th gear swap. That shouldn't cost you more than 1k.
