I took my K+N out.
I use a stock paper filter now. Paper doesn't flow as well at full throttle and High RPMs, but remember that a good paper filter has many more pleats and surface area than a K+N. This about equalizes things.
K+Ns work well in non dusty areas. They let in about 3% more fine abrasive dirt than paper.
Make sure your replacement filter is full size. Many Mfrs are getting cheap and making the actual element smaller, even though it fits fine. This means less surface area.

I'm running the AFE drop in, it's like a K&N I guess, but it has a solid flat top and I'm afraid the air is having too much trouble getting around the top of the filter in order to be sucked in. Do you think i'd be better off with the stock paper filter or will I loose power?

I use the K&N in the T-Bird and the wifes Prius . Used a K&N in the Z , changed it to a True-Flow . Changed back to a Modified a slim cone K&N and added a ABS cone on top for better flow . The slim cone filter allows more area inside the filter can , it all works out to more flow through the system . The True-flow is the better filter for the stock system . Daughter has the T-F in her Z now .

Where were you able to find a TF? I've been looking around and haven't been able to find them.

Don't get me wrong.
A properly cleaned and oiled K+N can work just fine.
But make sure it isn't over oiled. Clean your MAF after installing a K+N after a few weeks to make sure you didn't affect the MAF and IAT wires.
And you can smear a little grease upstream of the filter in the intake.
After several months, see if there is any dust/dirt deposit on it. It is a good quick check if your conditions warrant a K+N.
But in general, dusty areas are no good and willl get through. This will be shown in a high silicon content in a used oil analysis.

Theres a True-Flow on Ebay for $31.32 + 7.91 shipping . The filter is for a '95-'97 Ranger, ZX2 uses the same filter can .
I bought one off ebay years ago , then I got one from somebody on the site here a couple of years ago ,can't remember who it was .

I have a Fram Airhog in my silver one. I got mine at WalMart, they used to sell them, don't know if they still do.
My white one has a Ractive filter in it. Got a Ractive filter that had a heat shield around it, took the heat shield off, took off the rubber piece that would go on the opening of an aftermarket intake and dropped it in.
