suspension about to bite the dust

I read the sticky about all the interchangeability and about the coilovers, so does that mean that any coilover will fit from any brand or what. I've been looking to upgrade the suspesion but for where i live new stock suspension won't cut it. i was thinking that coilovers might be nice. so im looking at some options but not really sure was will fit. please help, my stock suspesion is on its final legs.
