I need as many pics from as many years as i can get, of the space between the alternator housing and the pulley on the alternator. Pics prefered, but also those who can't, could you just look at your car and tell me if you see a black machined shaft down there or more of the grey cast housing.
Please vote by the year and what you see when you look between the pulley and alt housing. Thanks in advance.

In between the pulley and alt housing. Is it a round black shank or a grey rough looking part of the housing?

I see gray for both the 99 (white) and 01 (Blue). Alternators could be from other cars tho. The blue car only has ~17,400 miles on it so it may be orriginal but the white one has ~54k miles and was a flood car.

EDIT
Here is the one from my 98. I believe I remember the owner telling me it was previously replaced. Anyhow, I dont see the lip, I just see blue (ODP).

Powder, are you looking for an offset? I checked a bunch of pulleys and I got some numbers if you need them...

No thanks. I have the offset. Need other things off of the alt itself.

Haha....got my UDP today. I will put it on this weekend (gonna wait until I'm at the shop and can use the impact.....).
I looked at my alternator. Titled as a 2000 Zx2, though I am not sure it has the original engine. I can not see anything....not even the lip of the aluminum under the pulley. there is maybe a half mm or so space.....the pulley is damn near touching the alt body.

Holy crap that's close. Make sure your alt housing is tight. It's 2 pieces.
Drew, i ran into trouble on my odp design. Should be ok though, but we'll see.

Seems to be, I can't get any play out of it...by hand though. I'm not wrenching on anything right now.

should the ODP be bigger than the stock?

No, you need to spin the alternator faster to compensate for the slower belt.

Think of the pulleys as a ratio. You have a larger driver (lets just say 2), and a smaller spinner (1). Your ratio is 2:1. If you underdrive your driver, you will have 1.5:1. If you make your spinner smaller, you actually make it spin faster. 1.5:2.
Think of it like the gears on a bike.

Yeah stock is about 2.25:1 (2.25 revolutions of alt pulley per 1 revolution of the crank pulley). When you underdrive w/ my pulley, you make it 1.34:1. So lets say at idle when stock your crank pulley is spinning at 1000 rpms (figurative, actual rpms are a little lower, bear w/ me). At the ratio of 2.25:1 your alternator is spinning at 2250 rpms (1000 x 2.25 = 2250). At the ratio of 1.34:1, your alt is spinning at 1340 rpms. This puts a massive drain on the alt and does not charge the battery so the ratio needs to be increased to as close to 2.25:1 as possible. While it may not be possible to make it 2.25:1 again w/ my crank underdrive pulley, it should however, be possible to put 14v through the alt again at idle. This is what i'm aiming for in making an odp that can compensate for my udp.

Finally got the Alt shipped out for you today. Good luck with the changes if there are any.
