View Full Version : ATX to MTX full conversion
Looking for a full Automatic to Manual conversion for a 2000 ZX2. I need ALL parts, as follows:
Shifter housing (the shifter sits inside of it and connects to the tranny)
Shifter rod (connects the shifter to the tranny)
Shifter inserts (small plastic inserts in the bottom of the shifter. Also, at the other end of the shift rod where it meets the tranny)
Shifter retaining clip (holds the shifter into the housing from the top)
Shift boot
Shift boot hold down (plastic peice that bolts to the bottom of the console to hold the boot in place)
Shift knob
MTX Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
MTX PCM
Brake and clutch pedal assembly (they are both on the same bracket)
Transmission
Transmission-to-engine block spacer (ATX has the same spacer as the MTX, but the MTX has one additional spacer)
Front and rear tranny mounts
Tranny top mount
Brake master cylinder from MTX
Clutch master cylinder (attached to the brake master cylinder by hose)
Clutch slave cylinder (goes on top of the tranny)
Clutch release lever (should still be in the tranny, the clutch slave cylinder pushes this to release the clutch pressure)
Clutch kit with throw-out bearing and pilot bearing
MTX flywheel
MTX crank position sensor with housing (the sensors are the same, but the housing is different)
Inner half-shaft for passenger axle (this is the part with the bracket)
Both axles
Axle nuts
Bolts for the passenger axle bracket (they are the same thread pitch as the tranny-to-block bolts, but they need to be about ½” shorter)
(Parts list from this guide: http://teamzx2.com/showthread.php?t=119)
Ideally, I would like a transmission with 70,000 miles on it or less, and I'd really, really like to not have to spend more than $400 on this. My automatic transmission is starting to shit out on me, and I'm going to HAVE to replace it at some point, so I may as well make it well worth it.

$300, and you drive to Columbus, OH to pull it on a weekend. I have a 98 (75k mi. on trannyw/ synthetic fluid since 5k) on jackstands in my garage. Bring a cut-off wheel. The "K" member is welded in the back. zx2guy19 will prolly help, as well as me, too. You're prolly better off to do it this way for practice. I have full hand-tools. Brad may contribute pneumatic tools and compressor, if neccessary.

seems pretty legit to me. You can use the rest for gas, and pizza/pop for the guys who help :)

It has ES m/m inserts f&r, too. Hence, the welded K-member (busted stud on re-install)

OH crap, I just saw that you were in a neighboring state. I didn't realize that you were that far into WV (that's one-way?). Offer still stands, but I understand your consideration in distance. I could put you up on the couch if it's gonna run into a Sat./ Sun. thing as long as you're not allergic to pets (Cocker Spaniel/ birds/ fish). That is if it's neccessary and you don't mind my wife humping your leg! LOL Otherwise, there's a clean low-cost motel by the exit, if you prefer.
Lemme know. It's here if ya want.
yeah, that's one way, and I would need to bring a truck to haul it. Hmm, I'll let you know...

The yard here (pick-n-pull)wants what I'm asking, so when it comes time to buy one for the SR, I'll have this $$.
I'm really just not into raping anyone for money, here. We all own ESCORTS!! Nobody is gonna wanna ship a tranny to help out a fellow ZXTuner, so my best offer is come get it, get practice with removal (for do's and don't's of re-install) and get a helluva deal from someone who's not out to get rich off of you buncha broke-ass mofo's! I love a good deal as well as the next guy, and I will sell stuff for profit, but you don't know the deal I got when I acquired it!!
There's really not any profit in this deal for me. The tranny's not doing me any good on a car that's not gonna see the street again, and is taking up my workspace for the SR in the garage! My profit is not having to pull it alone, and knowing I gave a ZXtuner a good deal who REALLY wants/ needs it.
PS If you take me up on the deal, I drink Michelob Lager on car days! :something:

ok sounds good , if not a weekend are you guys available during the week, like if i came down on a thursday or something
*sigh*
How wise is it to drive back to West Virginia with a brand new transmission installed in my car? It doesn't sound wise to me at all. That's one hard break-in on brand-new components.
As for hauling it in my trunk, a transmission and all parts necessary weighs what, 400-500lbs? My car's auto tranny would die half-way.
I can't do it this weekend or next weekend. I'm in the WVU drumline, and we have a camp starting this Friday until the 16th, then classes start on the 18th. We would need to schedule something further down the road, at least 2 weeks ahead so we can all coordinate something.
First question that I need an answer for: How wise is it to drive 300 miles at 65-80mph on a brand-new installed transmission?
Second: Who would be helping me do this, and would you guys be willing to help me pull the old trannies (my auto and dougie's manual), and swap in the manual?
Third: Would you be willing to take an automatic for a slight cut in the cost? (something to sell! :D) I'm not rich and I have to make sure I have enough to do this AND get myself through this year of college.
ZX2Fast
08-06-2008, 10:36 AM
The transmission only weighs 75-80 pounds. Along will all the other parts you might have 300 pounds of extra weight. It would be no different then having 2 passengers in the car.
ZX2guy19
08-06-2008, 11:54 AM
Fast- exactly. A trans weighs 88lbs shipping weight and like he said, the rest of the shit might weigh like 200 lbs. Have any fat friends that rode in your car? Sweet, your car can take it.
Who cares about the break in period. The trans does't know what car it is in, so it won't need to be broken in. It's just highway driving. It isn't like you are shifting non stop on your way home.
Waterboy9000
08-06-2008, 02:13 PM
plus its used, its not like getting a brand new car and ripping it 7k everywhere
So would we be doing the full swap on my car there?
My biggest concern is that we swap it there, I'm halfway home, and something breaks because it hasn't seated or broken itself in properly yet. *sigh* I dunno, it just sounds really dumb to me to swap out a transmission, then drive 80mph over 300 miles on it immediately. I mean, by common sense laws, that doesn't sound like a good idea, does it? How many of you have done a 5spd swap, then immediately drove 300 miles at 80mph on it? I just don't want shit breaking on me the moment I fix it.
ZX2guy19
08-06-2008, 03:33 PM
Don't drive 80. That is illegal first of all. And 2nd of all, why would it matter how much you drive? It isn't a brand new motor or something. You could drive it the whole way home at 150mph, it won't do anything different.
The swap will take at least 2 days. Make sure you plan on it.
Waterboy9000
08-06-2008, 03:56 PM
jesus christ dude, if you dont wanna do it then dont.
What would be my total investment for this?
Ie. how much for ALL parts, how much for guy19's clutch/flywheel combo, and what do you guys want out of this?
Also, do you guys have ALL the tools necessary to do this (including alignment tools and such)? Would I need to bring anything aside from money and my car?
...
Basically, what is my total end-cost (aside from travel) in both time and money, and what will I need to provide (aside from money and my car itself)? I need to see some cold numbers so I can figure this out and make a decision.
jesus christ dude, if you dont wanna do it then dont.
Dude, I never said I don't want to. I just am trying to see every possible bad angle I can discern from this and plan accordingly. You NEVER jump head-first into something without preparing for the worst-case scenarios.

Trans swap: 300
Fluid: $25
Gas: $45
Clutch/Flywheel: $225 picked up
Time: 2 days min
Food: $40 around for everyone who helps
-
200 for your trans, unless it is crap
and sell dougs flywheel and clutch for like $40
When you think, it will cost you around $1000 to fix an automatic ZX2. This is cheaper and obviously better.
Again, I do work and have tons of homework so no guarantee I will be there the whole time. I will help though.
By "200 for your trans, and doug's flywheel/clutch for 40", you mean you're buying it, or that's how much you think I could get for it?

I don't think I EVER offered to do a "swap". I offered $300 and you come pull it. I've never personally done atx-mtx swap. I'm willing to help, but you will need alignment, and all kinds of insignificant adjustments/ tweaks to mount. I really don't wanna swap em to be honest. I just want it out of the chassis that I'm stripping. That's why it's a helluva deal. You're pulling it. I'll help alot. I know where all my tools are. It's a cramped, one car garage. There's enough room in there to pull it, but a swap is gonna mean investing in an extra set of jackstands, and doing the install outside in whatever weather mother nature feels like giving us. You're prolly better off pulling it, taking it home and doing the swap there.
ZX2guy19
08-06-2008, 04:56 PM
Well shit. I am basically selling this for Doug and I shouldn't be, because it's his business.
I'm out. Let me know whats going on. Only weekend I can't do is next. I can do Sunday, but not Saturday.
Dougie, are there any problems with the transmission at all? I saw you mentioned something about the "K"-bar? What's that, and will it have any effect on this swap?
Guys, I understand and appreciate you're wanting to make a quick decision, but I think it's kind of shitty that someone would jump in the middle of my WTB thread and try and get what I asked for first if I didn't make an expedited decision on the matter (no offense meant, it's just kind of rude I think). If you want this as well, why not make your own WTB thread instead of hijacking mine? For that matter, this is something I may very well NEED to do; it appears to me you just WANT to do this. I really don't want to be rushed into making a decision in just a few hours or less when I need to really sit down and do some budgeting and planning to see if I can do this.
All aside from this... How about we do this: Start a line of "dibs" on all this shit. I called first dibs on Dougie's transmission and all other swap components, and guy19's clutch/flywheel. I'll let you know by Friday morning and if I can do it, we'll schedule a time in a few weeks or less to do this shit (so we all have time allotted for it, can call off work, plan around homework/tests, etc.). If I say I can't do it, then Fordboy, it's all yours. But I really need to sit down and work our the numbers and my time.
Can we please just not rush me into a decision so quickly? This is something I may desperately need to do, and I don't want to fuck myself in the end on this, and I need to make sure I can do it and do it soon.

Btw Doug, you don't need an alignment. Just saying. I have never aligned my car and it drives straight as a line.
Btw Doug, you don't need an alignment. Just saying. I have never aligned my car and it drives straight as a line.
He means aligning the clutch or something. I forget exactly what it is, but you align something along the lines of the clutch/flywheel/pressure plate/some doohicky.
Also, guy19, since Dougie doesn't have room to do the full swap, do you in your garage?

Oh, well, I didn't know your transmission was blowing out, too. My apologies. I got the impression you just wanted to do an MTX swap. Again, I'm sorry.
In any case, college starts in 1 week for me, hence why I need to schedule this and make sure I can afford it. I'm also in my university's drumline, which means every home game (and some away) I attend, and I have to work around that, too.
