Well i have spark again now. All 3 distributors i have had bad ignitors. So now i have a GM HEI module wired in to fix the problem. Its probably some sensor telling the ecu the wrong spark timing since mechanical timing is spot on. Unfortunately there werent any probes or Mx6s in the junkyard this morning. I have an extra crank pos sensor around here somewhere but it got lost. Gonna try searching for that tonight and replacing the plugs and wires too. Spent the afternoon fighting with the shift linkage.

Good to see you are still working on it. One thing I would add would be where you got some of the parts. I know alot of it are from the yardfs, but anything specific you had to order.
Also what year or specific trim parts.
Keep it going Ryan!
MrWeeyums
04-22-2008, 01:39 PM
The parts i ordered were just engine itself, the aftermarket stuff, and that HEI module from Advance Auto. Everything else has been junkyard runs.

There is if i was feeling ambitious enough. The kits mount them over the tranny. Theres also a few supercharger kits for this engine. But im most likely just gonna stick with nitrous.

Today i figured out the shift linkage issue. The zx2 one is too short by half an inch so i slotted the holes to move the shifter slightly forward. Shifts nice and smooth now and the shifter isnt cocked back at an annoying angle.
Still havent been able to get it to start. Itll fire a few cyls if the injector harnesses are unplugged, which makes me think its flooding itself. The plugs are soaked everytime i pull them. Im gonna try replacing the fuel pressure regulator and then the injectors if that doesnt fix it.

Thanks guys. The problem was 4 of the injectors were stuck open and flooding it. When i replaced them a wire came loose and it didnt start. Pissed me off real bad till my friend just found it today. Now i gotta make a custom coolant system and weld up the exhaust, then itll be driveable.

The speedo would work if i had a speed sensor, which im gonna try to get at the yard this week. The tach isnt wired up cause itll always read 1/3 higher than it should be since its reading 6 pulses instead of 4. The water temp isnt hooked up at all, gonna do that when i figure out the coolant system.

Sorry guys, but there would have to be a big price tag on that harness... I have so many hours into that thing it even boggles my mind. And I still don't know if everything is going to function correctly. I've had my swap done for over a year now and I still turn my fan on with a switch... The radiator should be big enough. Its bigger than the saab one Jeremys runnin in the wagon.
Got the front end on, everything seems to clear ok. The cap still comes off too but u have to wiggle it out. Ill have to run a brace from the upper core support to the hole in the center of the bumper for rigidity. Itll definitely need a skid plate cause it sits right at the bottom of the WW lip, which ive scraped a few times.

I bought a KLZE powered car and I have to say. V6 FTMFW.
I'm doing my research on the engine now, you have the JDM engine. Is your CR higher, I assume? Where does the extra 30 hp come from it must have something to do with the cams and/or head? I have heard the millenia has better internals.
Also do you know anything about the stock pistons? I saw my engine has sinter forged rods but it didn't say anything about the pistons. I saw something about the SVT Contour having stock Mahle pistons, but maybe that's just the SVT.

are you bringin the car to carlisle next weekend(all ford nationals)? If so, i'll be there with my ZX2 with the unpainted buddy club front.
capitalcrew
06-01-2008, 11:07 AM
Yes it does have higher compression.
MrWeeyums
06-01-2008, 11:28 AM
The power comes from the higher cr 10:1 instead of 9.2:1 IIRC, better flowing heads and intake mani, and the ecu (which i dont actually have yet, so i wont be making the full 200 right away). The straight neck ZEs have more aggressive cams too, but the curved neck is rated for the same hp. The supercharged Millenia has strong internals that a lot of ZE guys swap in when they boost their car.
Right now im waitin on the speed sensor to come in the mail from GotMilf. The old ones pretty stuck in there so i have to fight with that a bit. The tach and temp gauges need to be wired up somehow too. Even with a new thermostat im still worried about driving it without being able to read the temp considering how "custom" the coolant system is.
~Ryan

06-01-2008, 11:30 AM
d00d, you have full bolt ons. You'll be above the 200 with or without the ecu.
MrWeeyums
06-01-2008, 11:35 AM
Im hoping so but the VRIS wont work properly without it. Its supposed to be like 15hp once u get your ecu chipped to jap spec. Either way its gonna be a noticeable gain once thats done.

He will not have over 200 whp with just bolt ons , 200 at the crank yes.
The 3.0 Duratec block bolts up the the KLZE heads. You can use the SVT heads, cams, IM to the 3.0 block and push over 200 whp. I wouldn't call that bolt on.
Basically you have the CSVT engine it sounds like, oval port heads with better cams, and the ported IM.

06-03-2008, 07:43 AM
Did you say that engine had the variation of a G5 or an MTX75?
If it doesn't have the MTX75 you should swap to it.
100 shot and 200 hp should go quite nicely.
Does it have the stock tubular-esque headers?
How is the powerband on the Jspec one. The powerband is 5-7k only on every KLZE I've ever driven. I'm hoping with a UDP, header, SVT PCM, true dual, it will open it up more towards 3.5k.
capitalcrew
06-03-2008, 07:54 AM

I'm still going by numbers more than the letters.
I've never fancied the 4 letter japanese engine names, too hard to remember for me.
How much did you pay for the KLZE? The difference is minimal, could have swapped the pistons and IM and had the same engine essentially. Just wondering.
Do you know if they have flowtested the SVT IM agains the KLZE IM? I think the SVT IM would outflow it.
capitalcrew
06-03-2008, 08:12 AM
The KLZE is around 750 on ebay.
It is blocked here but I think this is the website that shows all of the differences between the engines and intake manifolds.

06-03-2008, 11:15 AM
I dont think the KLZE heads bolt up to the Duratec block. Theyre 2 totally different series of engines. Ones a Mazda design and the other a Ford.
Its a G-series tranny. I dont know if the MTX-75 can be made to work, but i doubt it since i havent heard of any of the probe guys doin it. Its not like with our zetecs where they came with the mtx75 and the g5m. All the KL engines came with this g series for their manual.
It would end up more expensive bringing a KLDE to KLZE spec because of the heads too. Once u buy the pistons, intake mani, and heads, then u have to assemble all of it and replace gaskets and hardware. $750 isnt bad upfront compared the the approx $200 id pay at the yard for the DE, then add on all those other things.
~Ryan

MrWeeyums
06-05-2008, 03:41 PM
Well i drove it today for a short trip so at least it moves under its own power. Its not 100% reliable at the moment so i dont wanna take it very far.
Last night i let it heat up to temp to make sure the thermostat opened. After about 15mins of idling it shut itself off, wouldnt start, and had no spark. Today i went to the garage and it started right up.
The other issue is the clutch lets out way at the floor, like pushing the carpet down to disengage. I cant find the FAQ for clutch adjustment so if anyone has it that would be awesome.

That kind of sucks that you only have one cam gear per cylinder bank.... I don't know if you planned on adjusting them much, but you won't be able to change your overlap very easily...

from what I have heard the klz's are somewhat famous for tossing coils and distributors.

Yeah, the only way to adjust them is pull the cam and realign the gears driving the intake cam. Im not gonna bother, theres probably not much to be gained.

Yeah unfortunately thats the thing with the KL engines. Id like to run megasquirt and coilpacks when i can afford it, but that wont be for a while. As soon as the sun starts goin down im gonna try to swap that coil and see if it helps.

Its still having the heating up issue today. Everytime it gets up to temp it turns off and wont start till something cools off. Im guessing distributor related but im not sure. Im gonna try to pull a coil out of one of my other dizzys and try it.

Hey, let us know what was causing this problem, because this sounds like what happens with the capri.

Well i think i have the problem solved. I just idled it for an hour and it didnt die. Turned it on and off a few times afterwards to make sure it would start again too. It was most likely the coil but im not sure since i took apart all 3 distributors and used the best condition of each part. Tomorrow i should be putting it on the road.

Well its on the road and drives around. Ill have a vid up in a few of the first real drive. Theres 2 issues that i have to take care of asap that just popped up. Theres a gas leak from somewhere near the tank, either the return line or the seal at the top. Im guessing the top seal since it just started today when i filled it. The other is major random hesitation. One min itll start missing and have barely enough power to move, then the next itll be normal again. Jeremys wagon did this after running at the track so im thinking something is still overheating. Only does this under load. If its sitting still idling itll rev right up normally. Happened mostly on the highway in 5th just cruising at steady rpms.

Theyre Jeremys old wheels off the wagon. He lent them to me so i wouldnt chew up my brand new Falkens till i can get an alignment. I actually kinda do like the look of the raised white letters on there.

The fuel leak is fixed. Not 100% sure where it was coming from, but theres a new return line bung and the tank seal is cleaned up and reinstalled. Installed new plug wires too so hopefully thatll fix the stuttering issue. Getting the gauges wired in is the next goal.

07-01-2008, 11:03 AM
Well its been on the road for about a month. Having a few random issues here and there but im tryin to take care of them as they pop up. Right now its running like crap till it warms up, and on cooler days its takin a while to warm up since the fan is on with the key. It made it to Cybermans meet but then the timing tensioner went. Thats fixed now. Gauges still arent working so that, and the real bad stuttering till its warmed up, are the next 2 tasks.

The stuttering seems to be taken care of now. I switched the VAF for the JE50 out of an Mx3 (which is the right one for the ZE) and an Mx3 ECU. Its run perfect all day with this combo. No luck with the gauges yet. Im gonna have to find a normal zx2 cluster to take apart so i dont risk ruining the sr cluster.

what gauegs dont work, all of them?
the speedo sensor is the same part number as ours at the local part store.
rpm is a ? i cant figure out, maybe a resistor can make up for the 2 extra pulses

The only gauge that works is fuel, and thats even kinda iffy. I almost ran out at 1/8 tank on the gauge yesterday. Its not just as easy as hooking up the wires for them. I have to pick up another cluster to take apart and screw with.

in my swap, none of the gauges work except fuel level. i have a 93. i think the best bet is to make an aftermarket setup/cluster. it definitely is quick for just a motor swap. mny honda friends compare it to a gsr motor in a civic hatchback. with jsut the motor swap it should be a low 14 second car. i also plan to spray, should put me in 12's :-)

Gauges are still the main concern at the moment. The chip just came in so ill have to get someone to solder that on this week. Hopefully thatll clear up the problem of running so rich. Dont think ill do much more this year. Id like to rebuild the heads with stronger valve springs and retainers and maybe a limited slip this winter. While thats apart powder coat a bunch of stuff. Eventually ill run a good sized shot on it once its running 100%.

Heres the gauges in. Not exactly a 100% fit, but the mx3 gauges come decently close. They still need a good amount of screwing with before theyll be right but its gettin there. At the moment both blinker lights flash when i use the turn signal, the tach jumps around randomly or everytime i put it in reverse, and the gas and temp gauges dont work for some reason. Ill be working my way thru the issues the rest of this week.

Fixed the tach tonight. The CEL light was interfering with the signal somehow. Unplugged the reverse lights too which also somehow interfered with the tach signal. Ill get back to these the next time i feel motivated. Turns out the gas gauge works but reads backwards. 1/2 tank is empty and E is full. Ill have more updates once this is sorted out.
~Ryan
EDIT: Scratch that, the tach is still acting up. Turns out sometimes when i turn the car on its fine and others its not. Think ill get a different cluster next time theres a V6 mx3 in the yard.
