Using the fill hole on the side you can't overfill it. Just fill until it starts to come back out.

I always fill it to the top of the vss hole. 3.6 qts. is about right.
Your Z will LOVE Mobil 1 full synthetic ATX. FTW

Pennzoil Syncromesh is a good choice. ATF was just a low dollar fluid ford decided to use.

M1 synthetic has no different friction qualities than dino ATF. It is friction modified for automatic transmissions - NOT synchros in manual transmissions. Also, it does NOT have AW and EP protection. Plus, it is expensive!
A poor choice, nowadays!
Use Pennzoil or GM Synchromesh, REdline MTL or MTL /MT90 mix, or Amsoil MTG. These are proper gear lubes that are friction modified, with great AW and EP additives.
MUCH better for your trans and differential, and for shifting.

Dude, you can't even spell HOLES. How the hell are you gonna change the fluid? Take yours to a shop, please.

I've been using B&M Trickshift ATF for almost 2 years now, everything shifts perfect.

I'll help ya bud!!!(im cool)
The drain plug is underneath the transmission(obviously), Its the allen head screw. It's a large allen head screw so you can't miss it.
To fill, you insert through the VSS(vehicle speed spensor) Its in the back of the engine bay and kinda tucked by the engine( if you can find the fuel filter, you can find the vss right by it on the trans)

yes and maybe yes. i use the vss on the top to fill; idk how people on here are able to funnel hose fluid into that one being it's angled down and whatnot.. the vss, however; isn't in the greatest location either.

i rather fill i in the fill hole since i have to open the bolt anyway to get a good level check.
VSS is hard to reach IMO and i heave read they brake.

There is no allen head fill or drain screws.
There are hex [6 point] 23mm bolts for the fill and drain. One on the bottom, and one facing forward on the trans.
Guess which is which for filling and draining?
And Dougiestyle's advice to fill it to the top of the VSS hole is absurd.

It's what the manual said. If not to the top, then it's just to the bottom of the hole. same difference.
If not to the top, where's the dipstick to know where "full" is?
I swear there's a how-to on this!

i finished. Eh i had some trouble because one of the bolts didnt want to go back in , the fill bolt, so i had to take the drain out and switch them around while fluid was going back and it was messy.
3 qts went in.

If anyone chooses to fill their trans by the cumbersome VSS method, you measure the oil level by re inserting the VSS and seeing where the oil level is on the gear part. It is the 'dipstick'. You have to clean it dry or it is very tough to read.
If you fill it to the top of the hole like someone ill advised, you will be WAY overfilled.
I have three manuals and none say to use that method, BTW.

Well if you fill it to the top of the VSS hole, when you re-insert the VSS it kicks the "extra" out, and you're spot on full. The VSS is only in there an inch at best. It goes just inside the bell housing. I know you're just supposed to fill it to the bottom of the VSS, but another 1/2"-1" isn't gonna hurt.
Besides you really can't see when it's to the bottom of the VSS when you're filling it. You can, however, see when it's to the top!
I have yet to have a problem with it.

doug - Read my post above on how to check the level, or read the manual.
Where do you get this weird idea from?
DOUGIESTYL

Seems like I did read it, but none the less, I'm in agreement with you, mech. It just makes sense to me that the bottom of the VSS is only just inside the bell housing, so if you over-fill it, when you re-install the VSS it kicks the "extra" out. Even if it's "overfilled", it's not by much. The VSS is only 1" long at the most.

Check out my last few posts about this: http://www.teamzx2.com/showthread.php?t=5646
Don't use the VSS, mine wouldn't come out, the side fill is easier for me to get to without breaking my VSS. The side fill has the same 23mm bolt as the bottom 23mm drain. I didn't have a 23mm socket and used a 24 and it worked fine. I filled mine with 3.5 qts of Penzoil syncromesh and half a quart ran out when I put it on the ground out of the fill hole facing the front of the car. After that I figured out you can fill it with the car on the ground. Raise the hood, use a walmart funnel with a coat hanger holding it up to the hood with a clear hose from home depot or like me, a rubber transmission hose from a front mount cooler kit I had laying around. This little rig will come in handy. I have used them on all my manual transmission vehicles and it really makes the filling easy.
