100k is nothing nowdays.
Maybe the water pump and timing belt system, but the engine should not need rebuilding yet. Another 100k with decent oil changes - probably more.
Our engines are great. Well designed and built.

The neccesity of rebuilding would depend on the condition of the engine. Does it burn oil, have poor compression etc? 100k today is normal. The Zetec is a very strong engine and with regular maintenance will go a long distance.
Remeber, a JY engine could be in worse condition than yours.

i have a diassambled zetec from a 1998 zx2 and this engine as around 150k miles on it and the cross hatch pattern still like new in the cylinders. nothing loose nothing wrong ... so i expect thoses zetec good for a long life.
one of my friend as for now 380000km on a stock 1998 engine and still going like new no burning oil no excessive valvetrain noise... only leaking oil by all the gasket like any zetec..!!

Theres no need to rebuild as long as your compression is in check. Unless you don't keep care of your car you shouldn't run into problems that low. I got my first zx2 at 108k and put 32k oh pure HELL on it. Reverse donuts, full speed roll backs, A LOT of ebraking turning.
The thing will not die. (I once drove over my lawn with 1.5" feet of snow on it. I had the thing pegged off the rev limiter for at least 45 seconds as I slowly made my way across the lawn. No problems).
If you want to get dirty take the head of, get a head gasket/mill your head to raise the cr to around 10.2:1. Get a OBX 4-2-1 header for $160, a 2.5" exhaust, port and polish your head yourself, and adjustable cam gears and VCT delete and you will feel no need to swap engines.
